| Lsherm Doctors at the hospital said humans would normally be able to survive for about four weeks without food. Besides eating snow, the man probably survived by going into a dormant-like state, physician Stefan Branth told Vasterbottens-Kuriren. "A bit like a bear that hibernates. Humans can do that," he said. "He probably had a body temperature of around 31 degrees (Celsius) which the body adjusted to. Due to the low temperature, not much energy was used up." A whole extra MONTH without food? How the fark was he awake when they found him? |

As long as you have water you can survive a pretty long time. Can you imagine what the inside of that car smelled like though? ... I don't even wanna try. |

... I'm so trying hibernation next year. Think of all the money you'd save on heating, food.... my god, it's brilliant, why have we not tried this sooner? Yogi, I should never have doubted your wisdom. /Off to find a pic-a-nic basket //And maul a camper |

Meh. I just spend 6 months in a leaky boat. |
||
| crypticsatellite Why the man ended up under the snow in the forest remains unknown, police said. |
||
| libranoelrose Obviously he was in this car and ate the upholstery. |

I'm sorry but this story but this story smacks of bullshiate to me. there is this thing that anyone who has had even basic survival training knows about called the "rule of threes." It is a rudimentary timeline of how long one can survive without the basic necessities. Three minutes without air, three days without water, three weeks without food. Granted there are some extreme outliers that exceed these standards, but by-and-large they apply to the average person. This guy is making crap up to sound impressive, /Grylls is a dilletante and so full of shiate that he should be a fertilizer salesman |

Could the cold have slowed down his metabolism enough to allow him to survive that long? |
||
| lousyskater
Many mammals do this all the time, so I don't see why people are freaking out about how this must be fake. The man's body temperature was lowered for an extended period of time, so it seems natural that his metabolism would slow down enough to survive for long period without food, and it's not like he was moving all that much if he was trapped in a car. He also had an ample supply of water(snow melt). |

DamnYankees: bullshiat. You cant possibly go two months without food, come on. There's no indication in the article, but it's not unreasonable to think he may have had some small snacks or something of the sort. Rationed carefully, even a tiny amount of food can make a huge difference. |

DamnYankees: bullshiat. You cant possibly go two months without food, come on. THIS. I call TOTAL BS. If he was that weak and disoriented, and couldn't answer WHY he was there in the first place, then why would they take at face value any date that he gave? Maybe he was there 3 weeks and at that point was so dazed he was just spitting out dates. And humans can go into a dormant state "like bears"? "Humans can do that too." ORLY? This whole article is BULLLLSHHIIAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTT |

This whole article is BULLLLSHHIIAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTT A lot of you don't seem to know anything at all about human thermoregulation. When in dire circumstances such as these, the metabolism DOES slow to almost a grinding halt, and we ARE in fact capable of non-shivering thermogenesis, meaning, like a hibernating bear, we convert stored brown fat directly into heat. |

Besides McKeown? And they were all right at the 2 month mark, in a warm prison with a toilet and fresh air, etc. I don't see your point, if anything it shows that this story is BULLSHIAT. |

See my point about the ones that lasted 116 days and survived. It depends on the person, there are many factors involved, but it is possible. You're going to have to live with that, even though you seem to have a vested interest in not learning your human biology for some reason... |

Key word is "warm". This guy was in a situation where his body temperature was lowered for an extended period of time, so it's to be expected that metabolism was much much lower than normal. |

This guy is making crap up to sound impressive, You're basing all this, despite what the doctors and professionals say, on a basic survival training maxim? His body adapted to the low temperature, so he essentially entered a hibernation stage where all he probably did was slept (or at least very sedentary, as much movement as you can have in a car) during that entire time. |

He also had an ample supply of water(snow melt). Did the sun melt the snow? Because this comes down to a basic thermal energy problem. Presuming the car was out of gas and the temps stayed freezing, every single joule of heat comes from body fat or protein burning up. The car itself is a poor insulator, the sleeping bag relatively quite good, of course. These are hard to calculate. But NOT water, that's easy to calculate! 1L of water= 1kg Heat of fusion (energy needed to melt): 334 kJ/kg Body temp=31C 4.186 kj/(kg-°C) *31C=134 kJ/kg Thermal energy used to bring 1L of 0C ice to 31C reduced body temp=468 kJ 1 gram of fat=37.8 kJ 468kJ/(37.8kJ/g of fat) =12.4grams of fat needed to melt and heat 1L of water Hmm, if he's doing nothing but sleeping, maybe he COULD survive on 1L of water per day, which would be an additional 1.64 lbs of fat burned over 60 days to melt and warm 1L per day. Actually, looks fairly inconsequential then, I'm surprised. |

erik-k: No one is asking it so I will... Seems the guy wasn't that far out of the way, is it really that impossible to dig your way out? Yeah. my thought too. One article said he was more than a kilometer off the main road which technically could mean 800 miles, but usually it means a little over a kilometer. Kind of sad nobody reported him missing. Or maybe he was an asshole. |

1 pound of fat= 3500 calories. Probably not burning more than 1500-2000 calories a day if your just sitting. 120,000 calories for 60 days= 34 pounds of fat. Most farkers could live for years! |

Also perhaps related to the mammalian dive reflex we share with marine mammals, in which the body shunts blood to the body core when exposed to low temperatures, and slows metabolism drastically, which is what can allow cold-water drowning victims to be revived sometimes hours after they technically drowned. |
