| Angry Drunk Bureaucrat FRCABRIDDEONPATTDAYDCWHOOOO I don't get it. |

| mitchcumstein1 I loathe St. Patrick's Day. I have volunteered to drive my best friend and his wife, along with her sister and husband and their parents to a Jason Aldean concert and back, even though I do not approve of Jason Aldean in any way, shape or form. |

| FreakinB My friend's engagement party is that night. Could be interesting. |

If you can get your hands on some cheap green food coloring make sure you scarf down a bunch of it so that you can puke green |

Read that as "Free Crab Rides". Although I bet there will be enough of that to go around on St Patrick's Day as well. |

Toronto area has something like this over the Christmas/New Years holidays - they call it Operation Red Nose. Not cabs, but private volunteers that will take you home if you've had too much. |

As a DC resident, all I can say is that I'm very glad the full moon and St. Paddy's don't coincide, because the city was a freaking disaster this past weekend and there wasn't anything all that notable going on. Not that St. Paddy's won't be ridiculous anyway... |

I'll be hammered and throwing beads in the Ybor City St. Pat's parade. Come point and laugh at me as I stumble down 7th Avenue and try to chuck beads without spilling green beer all over myself. |

groppet: Only problem is the cab takes about 4 hours to get there No kidding. DC cabbies suck. I once had to cab it from DC to Rockville, MD, first cab told me to get out, he wasn't going that far. I had to lie to the second cab, told him Bethesda, once at Bethesda I told him I changed my mind, needed to go to Rockville. $200, no joke, I should have just rented a room that night. |

This never works!!! The city or law firm or whoever always promises free cab rides but the cabs get taken or assigned very quickly. People then go out and get plastered with the idea that they can get a cab which of course then can't. Cut to hundreds of wasted people fighting over existing transportation services. Take my advice. Just go out, have a bunch of drinks if you want, and then drive home carefully. Good luck D.C. |

That's nothing. I took a cab home to CT from a party in NYC; my usual car service never showed. The guy wanted to charge me almost $300. I offered him $50, which was generous since I was already home. He got mad so I stabbed him; that'll show that ethnic bastard. Hang on, there's a knock on my door... |

| FNG The zone system was changed to those of similar mileage systems in the surrounding areas. With the meter displays visible. The cabbies were pissed and fought it tooth and nail, because the zone system made it easy to rip people off. That said, yes, it is a nice thing for SoberRide to do, but you might as well call the cab as soon as you get to the pub, because it will take hours to get there. So great idea in theory, execution not so much. Besides, if you're going to drop $200 at the pub, you can afford the trip home. You'll still be lucky to flag down a regular cab. |

StrangeQ: here to help: They shouldn't have to do sh*t like this. Essentially these programs are for selfish, irresponsible douchebags. Yeah they should have to drive their own selves home. Something tells me that the selfish, irresponsible douches of this world aren't going to wait for St. Patty's day specifically to act in this manner nor are they going to suddenly wake up on St. Pat's and decide not to be giant a-holes. I also suspect that the people who drink but plan ahead are going to go ahead and do just that on St. Patty's, just like they do any other Friday or Saturday night (or Tuesday, etc.). So a plan like this appeals to the "responsible but either rarely drinks or rarely goes into the immediate DC area to do so" crowd, which is really unfortunate. I can't imagine getting all psyched up for a rare night of drinking in the city only to find out that these "free" cabs are undoubtedly nearly impossible to get and instead having to trick a cabby into taking you back to whatever ex-burb you hail from. It's a plan that sort of ensures that these folks only end up coming into the city once or twice a year and each time realizing that it's more trouble than it's worth, hence coming less and less frequently. Whomever arranges these free rides (and if you look at it in terms of numbers, they're only offering about 2,000 free rides per year in a city of 7-8 million people) would probably be better off arranging buses from ex-burbs to pick-up and drop-off locations in DC and cabs at the end point in the 'burbs to shuttle people home again at a reduced, pre-paid price. Seems like you could handle a lot more people in a much more orderly way that way while allowing the cabbies to stick to their normal areas/routes. |
