It's also worth noting that when the mayor was walking around with a security detail and a "HOLY FARK THE BUILDING IS ON FIRE" incident happened, the mayor was the one who ended up pulling a woman out and being treated for second-degree burns.

But Cory Booker really is just that much of a badass. I am so cynical my heart is a just a container of salt harvested from the tears of broken childhood dreams, and I actually believe he did this just because he's a farking wonderful human being.

He'll never be President. We don't deserve him.

The documentary Brick City focuses heavily on Booker, and he comes off as both brilliant and extremely principled. Here's a guy who grew up wealthy-- his parents were executives at IBM. He went to Stanford and got his B.A. and M.A. He gets a Rhodes scholarship, then goes back for his law degree at Yale. When he graduates, he has one of the best academic pedigrees anyone could hope for.

And what does he do with that? He works in free law clinics for the extremely poor. He moves into one of the worst areas of Newark and becomes a full-time advocate for better living conditions. He spends months living in a motor home, leaving it in the worst parts of the city so he can document why Newark is in such bad shape, and advocate for solutions. Even after he's elected mayor, he walks the streets of Newark, sometimes in the middle of the night, with his team to ask people what is happening in their neighborhood and what they'd like him to do. He holds office hours where people can come in and explain their issues to him-- in a city of over 300,000. And apparently, you know, in his free time, he rescues people from burning buildings.

He's been in Newark since 1998. If it's all just a plan to run for Governor, he's really, really patient. Talk about the long game. And if he runs against Christie, it's be the biggest charisma gap since Nixon vs. Kennedy. Booker is a handsome All-American football star who commands a podium as well as anyone I can think of. Christie looks like he has inflicted himself with Types Two Through Nineteen Diabetes, and ...

It is pretty telling that the republican wet-dream candidate is such a stark contrast. I don't see Christie running into a burning building to save a person.... a sandwich, maybe. But a person?

Booker seems like the real deal. And if he is the real deal, he might not have an interest in higher office at all. He might be smart enough to realize he can do more good on a lower level.

Keep making cracks like that, subby, and you'll find that, somehow, Cory Booker has talked you into donating to Newark's public schools.

I'm not sure that's true for Booker. I think it's true for some people because they can only handle the relative small-ball of running a city, but everything I've seen from Booker indicates that he has the stones to handle being the Governor of ~9M people.

He raised ~$6M as a guy who never held office to run for Mayor of a poverty-stricken city. Run him state-wide, and he'll pull in all sorts of money from ~30x the people and a much higher median income.

He's also popular with another one of New Jersey's key demographics, even if they seem to be strangely interested in finding him a nice girl to settle down with, and could introduce him to a niece if he wanted.

As a member of that demographic I can confirm this. My father who is a die hard republican and has a generally dim view of all politician loves Corey. We've met him at a few events and he is a pleasure to talk to.

He's what Christie wants to be but is too much of a dick to pull off. Booker has pissed off everyone at some point in his career. He had a very high profile fight with the teacher's union. He came out in very strong support of marriage equality even though his electorate is largely against it. He fought with the police, career democrats, and Newark Council members.

But where Christie genuinely likes upsetting people both professionally and personally, ("You know, something may be going down tonight, but it ain't going to be jobs, sweetheart."), for Booker, it's an avenue of last resort. He wants to do what's best for the city and what's right and if that means pissing people off, so be it. But he does not actively seek out or enjoy those moments.

the guy is incredible. He shovels old folks' driveways during snow, he responds to people when they have gripes about certain situations, and gives them honest answers, not bs politician answers. He rides with the Newark cops in the most dangerous areas of Newark, and I think I heard he pulled over some guy for littering.

Even before he became mayor of Newark, he was a hometown legend. Everyone knew about him. He was a star athlete, a star student..... and of course came from one of the only black families in town :-) Teachers remembered him so well, they'd tell stories about how great he was. I'm not joking.

He's insanely popular in NJ. People honestly ADORE him. I've heard, however, that he's not interested in the bigger political arena because he thinks he can better help people on a lower level.

But if he DOES run...BOOKER 2016! I know a LOT of people in NJ who'd campaign for him. I'd volunteer no problem.

In his first term, her personally walked the streets of Newark at night to help fight crime and talk to the homeless and drug addicted, and street workers to try to help them personally. He has hours where anyone can just come in his office and voice their concerns! During the blizzard in 2010, he enlisted Twitter to help him deliver diapers, formula- anything that was needed- to constituents stuck at home. We need more like this guy!
