| Skeptic arrested and charged with blasphemy for pointing out a "miracle" was actually a leaky pipe and capillary action at work. See India, this is why you can't have nice things |

| TsarTom The priest of Our Lady of Velankanni church, and representatives of the Association of Concerned Catholics (AOCC) demanded that Sanal apologize. When they saw Sanal refused to bow to their demands, they.. file(d) a blasphemy case against him. Can any religion file blasphemy charges in India? |

You know, it's easy to dismiss this as third world shiatholery, but if you're Catholic (or, really, just "religious") and think this is just "third world shiatholery", you probably don't believe what you claim to believe in the sense that the church you attend teaches you to believe it. It's all well and good to go to church every Sunday, but this bullshiat is what YOUR bullshiat really is when it's actually applied. / all that said, the entire article is based entirely on one side of the argument as presented on Boing Boing.... |

To provide fair consideration, ethical behaviour should not be expected from an organization that knowingly concealed evidence of child molestation and that knowingly protected child molesters from prosecution. |

TsarTom: Can any religion file blasphemy charges in India? Yes. I sense a potential religious war based on this type of litigation. |

Look, I had a lovely supper and all I said to my wife was, "that piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah" |

Splinshints: / all that said, the entire article is based entirely on one side of the argument as presented on Boing Boing.... I'm curious, what rational explanation could there be for a blasemephy charge? what sensible, reasonable and rational explanation could there be for the other side? I'm gobsmacked that this law even exists! |

| Gyrfalcon Interesting, because this guy has debunked many similar claims throughout India, mostly of the "drinking Ganesh" statues (supposedly, the elephant god Ganesh began drinking milk on a holy day some time back), if memory serves me correctly, and nobody was out calling for his arrest, although the same laws were still in place. This may be an "overzealous Catholic" thing, instead of an Indian thing. |

I don't think they really have those laws... at least according to wikipedia |

I thought miracles had to be certified by the Vatican before they could be described as such. |

Sanal explained his findings and accused the concerned Catholic Church officials of miracle mongering, as they were beating the big drum for the drippling Jesus statue with aggressive PR measures and by distributing photographs certifying the "miracle". If true, then the Roman Catholic Church ought to be ashamed of itself. |

This may be an "overzealous Catholic" thing, instead of an Indian thing. A Hindu tantrik attempted to employ a tantrik ceremony and, later -- on a televised special that was reportedly watched by millions of Indians -- an extensive ritual of "black magic" to kill Mr. Edamaruku, at Mr. Edamaruku's own request. The acceptance of this challenge suggests that the failed tantrick actually held faith in his own ability. The Church's reliance upon the force of an irrational and stupid law rather than upon attempts at supernatural remedy may be a consequence of Church leaders being aware of their supernaturalistic claims being entirely false. |

I think the universe is miraculous enough as it is. There is no need to believe the God does bizarre or illogical things just to mess with us. |
