| vpb Can't have anything popular in London, too dangerous. |
||
| cgraves67
Too bad. That would've been cool. Can't have that now can we. |
||
| chookbillion
Couldn't they just gather some hoplites to help control the crowd? I would love to see this myself. It looks pretty cool. |

FTFA: "...and could even lead to spectators throwing themselves from bridges." Really? Farking really? Seriously? You don't think too highly of your own population there, do ya London? |
||
| King Keepo
People throwing themselves off bridges? Dogs and cats living together? Mass hysteria? Seriously, why can't we have nice things any more? |
||

It's a fun idea, and the British hate fun, or anything really cool or different. Now go back to eating your bland food while watching your kids not play on the playground, because safety first. |

Remember when the Brittas Empire was satire? Oh for those days again ... |

The excuses given sound seriously made up. I'm hearing them in Tommy Flanigan's voice. "People will...jump into the Thames, yeah that's the ticket." So what's the real reason the Brits are balking? |

I was pretty impressed that the Greeks still had a warship given their financial situation, and then I saw it |
||
| ha-ha-guy
But that giant flotilla on the Thames for the Queen's jubilee is still on right? |
||
| CygnusDarius
I think the last time London had any ship that used rows (as well as sails) was a series Viking ships, so I'm guessing they don't want to repeat that, even if they're Greeks. |

AKTurkey: I was pretty impressed that the Greeks still had a warship given their financial situation, and then I saw it Melee combat is a good answer to these tough, economic times. /What is cheaper, making a sword or an ak-47? |

Jesus Christ, you Brits used to be bloodthirsty take no prisoners bunch of yobs who stomped on the terra. Grow a farking pair!! (good grief) /that is an impressive warship |

The Trim's range is to short for serious work. Upgrade to the Catapult version for a few wood and gold IIRC. Then you really have something, and the ability to keep people from getting to close. \splash dmg FTW \\seriously - not going to do it because it might be "to popluar." unclench the cheeks Francis. |

I'd guess the AK-47, actually. Scales of economy and all. |

Poor Prince Philip. I bet he had something to do with this. If he'll have Diana killed, he could easily shove it to Greece for exiling his family. He could have been King of Greece. Instead he ends up with Elizabeth. What a let down from all those handsome Greek boys. |

You waited too long and they developed the trireme. You should've rushed and attacked them waaay before the bronze age. |
||
| stevarooni CygnusDarius: /What is cheaper, making a sword or an ak-47? cgraves67: I'd guess the AK-47, actually. Scales of economy and all. Not only scales of economy, but the fact that an AK-47 uses a pretty small amount of steel; cheap steel, at that. Throw on a chunk of cheap wood, and you've got yourself a weapon! A sword takes a pretty good amount of steel, strong enough to withstand some serious stress if it's to last after the first strike |
||
| Kaka
I'm surprised they were willing to give up one of their few core warships for that long. |

You need to get powder, not to mention materials for the shells. |

So what's the real reason the Brits are balking? Well they hate to say it outloud, because it's been like 3,000 years an all, but they're still just a little wary of accepting a gift like this from the Greeks-they have a bit of a reputation after all |

Vikings invaded England, and sometimes they rowed their long-ships. |

Well, as every civ player knows, there is a certain risk of losing triremes. So having concerns about security is understandable. / also, ancient Mediterraneans aren't experienced in sailing the shallower North Sea with its stronger tides // If I remember De bello Gallico correctly, Caesar had more headaches dealing with simply shipping his troops across the Channe and landing them roughly in the same area than he had with the waiting armies who were trying to throw them back into the sea |

God those guys were obnoxious....you swarm up a bunch of infantry and plop a few in there, then start converting the opponents heavy hitters...argh i hated them. when i was cheating i had a car with a rocket launcher guarding my base. they converted it and it destroyed the town center and all my workers along with it. still managed to win though had a workshop and enough houses to form a small army of catapults. |

A google search for 'salami battle' brought up something stranger than i expected PS; for whom of you that don't know what an OAP is, it means "Old Age Pensioner". |

| brantgoose Maybe they can turn it around and storm the Gaza strip instead. After all, the Philistines were People from the Sea, and are believed to have orginated in Asia Minor. Their early art was very like Greek art, suggesting they were closely related to the Dorians, or possibly the Ionians, the Corinthians, or the Composites. Sadly, the quality of their work degenerated in Philistia, becoming, well, Philistine. It's high time for Philistines to take back Philistia. Lordy. Lacks a mercy. "The Philistines be upon us!" to quote my favourite line from Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. |

would lead to overcrowding, traffic chaos and could even lead to spectators throwing themselves from bridges As the Olympics themselves will cause to trouble. |
||
| stevarooni CygnusDarius: Mmm, point taken. The problem, however, lies in the bullets. You need to get powder, not to mention materials for the shells. You can pay under 30¢ a round for 7.62x39mm ammunition in the U.S. (probably cheaper if you buy in bulk). Obviously you never have to buy "ammunition" for a sword, but even with the cost of, say, a couple hundred rounds of ammunition, an AK-47 is cheap. |

Could be that the Brits are just petty-jealous that it's not their own idea. |

| stevarooni CygnusDarius: When you say Buy in bulk I imagine a brown paper bag chock-full of bullets :p. Put into that bag using a big ol' metal scoop, yeah. ;-) I can just see the old ladies squinting at the scale, pulling off or adding on a cartridge at a time to get exactly the amount they want. i was talking more about the crates o' ammo. If I remember correctly, you could get just over 1,000 cartridges for around $250 in a sealed tin housed in a collectible wooden crate, suitable for home or office. |

Also, friend buys the empty metal tins to sell them here as boxes in a sort of edgy shop he has (he also paints them black and adds them the Anarchy logo and stuff like that, which amuses me to no end). |

WTF is it with that alleged article, anyway? "... the spectacle of the barge ..." "... the ornate trireme." "A wooden, 70-ft-long structure ..." It may be a structure of some sort, but is it a dessert topping or a floor wax? "The International Advantage Corporation, a US exhibits and entertainment distributor, said it had already spend £150,000 dollars of refurbishing the ship. The Financial Times claimed the Greece's defence minister was also planning to make a formal complaint ..." You owe me a new parser, The Telegraph. |

I was in the crew of Olympias when she was in London in 1993. I don't remember anyone jumping off bridges, but we did almost hit a bridge, sideways. Rowing Olympias is an awesome experience. |

ha-ha-guy: But that giant flotilla on the Thames for the Queen's jubilee is still on right? The Queen should borrow this for her flagship. Seriously, nothing says "it's good to be the Queen" like 170 galley slaves toiling below decks while you take the breeze. |
