Best place to enjoy a good book? A) Late night in bed. B) Sitting on the beach. C) Behind home plate at a Kansas City Royals game

Well it's not like you're going to enjoy watching the game.

When I had Tampa Bay Buccaneers season tickets, there was a grandpa who came to every game with his grandson. They sat in the row behind us, at the 49-yard line. These were not cheap seats. The 9-year-old watched the game, and cheered his little butt off. Grandpa alternated between sleeping in the stands, and reading Harry Potter books. Every game. FOR FOUR YEARS.

Meh. The Royals can and will hit. Their defense has been shaky, and their pitching staff is a motley collection of castoffs and non-prospects. Casual fans love 10-8 slugfests!

They always rag on Stephen King for reading while watching a game from his premium seats at Fenway. I don't see the problem. It's the man's business, after all, and it's not like you can't follow a baseball game and read at the same time. I watch about 100 games a year on TV and I've got a book in front of me during every one of them. Never missed anything important.

*hear crack of bat*
*look up, see what happened*
*back to reading*

No reason to watch the rest, ultimately.

Starting pitching is the real problem. Defense isnt that bad will pick up with Perez and Cain come off dl. That and not stranding base runners

I watch 10 or 20 Mariners games a year at Safeco, and I do a fair amount of websurfing during all of them. Not really seeing a difference.

I instantly thought of Stephen King when I saw this article and was like "what's the big deal?" Besides, I can go to any MLB park and find someone who brought their iPad.

One of the better stadiums. I attend 15+ games a year at Kauffman never been embrassed being seen there. Visting cards fan usally are only real problems there.

13 bucks for left field bleachers is one of the great bargains in this city.

Wish I had saved it as a file, but... the Fox sports sideline "human interest" reporter interviewed him during a playoff (iirc) game, trying to give him a hard time about reading during the game. Got a bit more than he bargained for, he did.

Yeah, King's response?

"I've always brought a good book to baseball games. Used to be, I could read a page or two between innings, but since your network took over and added so many commercials, I can finish whole chapters."*

A quick cut away and some stammering by the morans in the booth didn't really help, nor decrease the LOLarity.

/ * Close to this... I remember the "page or two" vs. "whole chapters" specifically... wish I had the exact quote and the video

I just read that as I'm watching my tribe face the royals. Royals have a runner on second. Mier (sp?) at the plate lays down bunt. Runner doesn't go, Mier out at first.

I lol'd

My best bargain at Safeco was back in 2008, IIRC.

We got there around the second inning with no tickets. (Planned on buying them from a scalper.)

As soon as I approached one of them and started the conversation, we were swarmed by a few more. We ended up getting two tickets about 15-20 rows behind home plate....$10 each.

/Cool story bro.

My problem is more when people are given seats as a gift, accept them, and then don't give a damn about the game or don't even go. If you don't care, don't go. Let someone have them to whom it might mean something.

But if you bought them, knock yourself out.

Can never beat my buddy and me looking for tix to Cubs-Padres at Petco from scalpers (seriously couldn't believe they actually didn't have two seats near each other - damn Cubs fans ruining the whole "no one gives a f*ck" thing they had going on)...two fairly attractive chicks come out of the turnstiles and offer us free tickets. After a double-take at the "no f*cking way" aspect of it, we go in...and hey, it's corporate seats and they get free food!

Free food, free tix, and attractive women to sit with. Now THAT'S a way to enjoy a baseball game.
