This is almost as good as the saw blade crossbow from a couple days ago. |

| Grand_Moff_Joseph Unless this guy managed to create Nadion particles in his garage, he just did a fine job sandwiching a high power laser into a prop replica. |

| Relatively Obscure I, for one, was stunned to see that he appears to be fat. |

| HawgWild There definitely should be more phaser settings. Set phasers to tickle! Set phasers to hiccups! Set phasers to bring me a sammich! |

yeah, yeah. beautiful hack. yeah, yeah. very old... Suicidally dangerous to your eyes. If you do this or know someone that does this without PROFESSIONAL-grade eye protection, it's darwin award time for your vision. |

Britney Spear's Speculum: GuyKip Kay builds Star Trek phaser. FARK: It actually workssome dude rebuilds it, films it, and submits the video to Fark. |

Stumbled on this a few times, a bit under whelming. On a side note, it has been interesting to watch increasingly stronger lasers get put up on http://www.dragonlasers.com/. Oh to have that kind of disposable income. /kitty doesn't want the laser |

Meh, I kinda prefer the new version phasers. ![]() Less chunky than the TOS ones, and more utilitarian than the TNG tv remote. /I've always wondered how they expect to get any accuracy out of a pistol format tho. /The federation doesn't kill people at ranges greater than twenty yards? |

| I_C_Weener Watch out balloons. |

Well looks like he's ready for the balloon apocalypse. |

What's real fun is combining a stun gun and a couple of UV laser (or one laser with a beam splitter). The UV lasers ionise paths through the air the stun gun can discharge down. The lasers would have to be far enough apart that they don't short-circuit along the way though and that'll limit the voltage. Some folk are working on them but they're briefcase-sized rather than pistol-sized, I think. Then you add the visible laser and the pew pew pew sound effects. ![]() /Just 'cos. |

NowhereMon: This is almost as good as the saw blade crossbow from a couple days ago. It's good to see Perdito Street Station getting some love. |
||
| CrazedHatter Looks like he used one of those blue lasers that we heard about last year, nifty I suppose but it's a long way from being a phaser. The power of the laser is enough that it'd be somewhat dangerous though, so I give him props for that. |

since "ballistics" don't really apply to beams of light i'm pretty sure a pistol sized phaser would be just as accurate as a rifle form factor. |

I have a roommate that can't be trusted with lasers, so I don't dare get one of those higher powered blue ones, even though I definitely would like one. He already stupidly shined the green laser I have into his own eye. \Dumbass. |

I think he guy just included the smoke it make it easier for the camera to pick up. |

At least we have a weapon in case of a balloon invasion. Shouldn't it work against small bugs also? |

echri: since "ballistics" don't really apply to beams of light i'm pretty sure a pistol sized phaser would be just as accurate as a rifle form factor. Ballistics isn't the reason most people miss their target. ![]() If you took a pistol and strapped it to a table you could probably get decent accuracy out to fifty yards at least. With my craptastic marksmanship, the safest place for a bad guy to be is standing in front of me at that distance. Its all in the grip, and it takes alot of practice to iron that out. If you remove the noise and recoil then maybe people will stop flinching. But unless you've got some aiming assistance, putting beam on steel at that range is still going to be tricky without a shoulder rest. /I hope the 2nd amendment will protect my right to bear energy weapons. /Cause I'd like to find out how tricky it will be. |

| Honest Bender Without clicking, let me guess: That guy who built a purple laser into a plastic phaser. And he pops black balloons. *click link* Yup. Old news is ooooooold. |

Can't watch videos at work, but I already knew this is what it was. Just like the guy that built the OMG IRON MAN PALM BLASTER that could pop a balloon from an amazing 10 feet away and light a match after spending a minute trying to hold the beam steady on the tip long enough to heat it. |

echri: since "ballistics" don't really apply to beams of light i'm pretty sure a pistol sized phaser would be just as accurate as a rifle form factor. I believe it was explained in a DS9 episode that the difference is the number of phaser bursts are capable of being fired and how many settings are available. Larger rifle means that it has a bigger/longer lasting power cell, therefore it's capable of more shots. |

I'm prone to play with things, and playing with something that can permanantly blind you before you even realize it is never a good thing. |

Yeah, cuz "heeling: anticipating recoil" and "pushing: anticipating recoil" make so much sense for a phaser... Seriously, you have a BEAM OF LIGHT. Not a bullet. If you miss your target, you adjust until you are hitting the target. You can adjust a beam. I learned this when I was 7 years old, going to the bathroom (I apologize to my parents for the first 6 years) |

| Tater1337
would be interesting to get about 7 of those lasers, a couple prisms and mirrors and get all the beams to overlap. and a bigger battery, and cooling fins..... /would burn my name on a wall at random places //or subbys name |

I was never really clear on what a phaser actually WAS, or what kind of energy it projected. |
