Howard Dean: Inkjet printer cartridges are expensive. I love inkjet printer cartridge cost jokes so much! /No, seriously, I do. Keep 'em coming. |

I'm getting a kick out of this thread. I have to replace the cartridges in my inkjet printer sometime soon. Looking at about $600 for the entire printer for refillable cartridges. /220ml cartridges - most consumer printers are around 10-20ml per carttridge //8 of them ///17" wide Epson Stylus Pro 4000 //OEM cartridges from Epson cost even more. |

[CSB] We have a Dell inkjet and the printer was complaining it was out of ink. I shook the cartridge and it felt about 1/3 full. After messing with it for an hour, I went online and found the cartridges have a chip inside that counts flow or some nonsense to determine if the cartridge is empty. I finally cracked it open and it indeed had 1/3 of the ink left. [/CSB] Why is this even legal? |

I knew a guy who made beer money shoplifting cartridges and selling them at the university. |

The driver said he was "'pretty sure' they were stealing items but didn't care because they were paying him $100 a day," according to court documents. |

What's funny is that ink is marked up like a zillion and a half percent. It has virtually zero manufacturing cost. In fact the biggest component of the cost is the plastic shell because the printer companies themselves long ago made the decision that each and every single printer had to have a unique cartridge so that none of them could ever be interchangeable. Commercial photographers who use ink printers use these big external tanks connected to the print head with a small vinyl hose and the pint or so each tank holds, I assure you doesn't cost a million dollars. |

Did you hear the one about the expensive inkjet cartridge? /it was stolen |

I never buy replacement cartridges. It's cheaper to just toss the printer and get a new one. |

I work for an office supply store(in the copy and print department), so I am getting a kick out of this whole thread. Seriously, though, yes, it is overpriced, and you'd all be better off switching to Laser printers. Yes, toner costs more, but it is a powder, so it will never dry out, and it makes for more copies(1.5x to 2x more). Why do you think all the printing stores use Laser over Inkjet? CSB I remember working in a kinkos near KU. At the start of every semester, you'd see the more ingenious students come in and copy their entire textbooks, front to back, and then leave to go return the textbook to the university bookstore. Officially, we were against the practice, but with the staff majority made up of college students, no one really cared. /CSB Happens at the place I'm at currently, too. The really smart ones get the finished product bound with covers("John's notes" on the front), just for fun. /working there while my degrees are finished or I get an internship at some point |

You think cartridges for inkjets are expensive, try going to Staples and asking for replacement laser beams for an HP LaserJet. |

+1 Subby, been shaking my printer cartridge for almost a month now postponing the inevitable... |

On a side note, the theft of ink from where I work currently(and the surrounding office stores) is the cash crop of the local mexican gangs. Drugs are nice, but it isn't illegal to carry around a trunk full of ink cartridges. Their yearly raids are bound to start any week now . . . This isn't smash and grab, either, they coordinate this shiat. |

ThatVANguy: You think cartridges for inkjets are expensive, try going to Staples and asking for replacement laser beams for an HP LaserJet. yes, they're more expensive, but they last so much longer ... unless you are printing out reams and reams of stuff. /ream = 500 sheets of paper, for the uninitiated |

A few years ago I bought a top of the line HP inkjet, with the seven color cartridges I thought I outsmarted their tri-color cartridges where you had to toss it after one color ran out even though there was ink remaining. WRONG. GD things wouldn't print after a year of use, cust serv said it was to prevent clogging spray nozzles, F that, I've used 3 year old ink in inkjets for years w/out any issues. I asked for an override, none possible they said. F HP, never another product I vowed, and bought an Epson. fark Epson, same GD crap from them. So, now I have a printer that has probably printed 30 pages over two years because after year 1 it said I needed new cartridges, would be like $90. I'm sure there's a fix, but I just send my jobs to work now. God damn racket they got going there, I hope they're happy getting $0 now instead of what would probably be about $60 or so over two years. |

I just stopped with inkjet printers, getting prints from a kiosk is so much cheaper and the quality is a lot better than you can get on a home inkjet printer. Bought a black and white laser printer for printing text and stuff at home. I really love the ink cartridges that have chips in them that tell them to expire even if they aren't empty. They must have some great lobbyists to get away with the crap they do. |

I based my printer buying decision on the cheapest toner I could find on amazon (remanufactured cartridges.) I ended up with a Color Laserjet 3700. It's pretty kickass. At the rate I'm going, I'll probably need to buy ink in 2015. |

zobear: Our students burn through printer crack like it's going out of style. /they're gonna be really pissed when we start charging them for it next year. I've heard rumors that grad students in other departments at our university are limited to the number of pages they can print on school printers. Fortunately, our department isn't one of 'em. |
