Well, the TSA can never be too careful. You choose to wear the turbin, and you're going to be scrutinized. Racial profiling is acceptable when airplane safety is involved.

Next step? Internal passports. America has become the USSR and Russia is enroute to becoming first world.

Nothing they're doing is making flights safer. The liquid rules are protecting you from explosives that can't possibly be formulated during flight (TATP) and they have no way of detecting a rectum full of Semtex.

It's all theater for Ma and Pa Kettle

Also various liquid explosives aren't the sort of thing you could get on a plane because they don't do well with being shaken, as they would be while being carried in a bag. They go boom.

The TSA have, in response, developed an app to laugh at the complaints and send them right through a virtual shredder.

Applying extra security "randomly" to people who "look like" terrorists is actually one of the less ridiculous things TSA does.

And when they do that, their procedures do nothing to keep flights safe from a bad guys who spend more than 15 minutes thinking of a plan.

Although this is one of the most ridiculous things that gets said everyday by useful idiots. Arizona is having a great time with it's immigration law and targeting people who "look like" illegal immigrants, for instance.

So, just to entertain us all, could you give us a quick list of famous Sikh terrorists?

Sikhs want to create a nation called Khalistan. They don't care where they create the nation. It could be in Northern India but Sikhs would be just as happy if Khalistan were carved out of Iowa.

And who did they blow up, shoot, stab or threaten in order to get the paperwork sped up? Wanting a country of your own isn't exactly terrorist behaviour.

Wasn't that part of a longer running conflict with some ethnic tensions en political grandstanding/oppression thrown in? The tensions led to the conflict and the wish for a country was based on the separate state they were promised within India somewhere in the 60s, but never got.

A Chinese friend of mine has been "randomly selected" for a search every single time he has ever been on a plane in the US. One time, all connecting passengers were asked to get off the plane because they were going to use a different plane for the next leg of the flight. He waited by the clerk's desk the entire time, and when the passengers were allowed onto the new plane, he was "randomly selected" again. Didn't matter that he was in their sight the entire time, and that he didn't actually do anything.

I see no indication that the TSAs policy specifies turbans only and not all headwear in general.

The TSA is a bunch of morons, but allowing potentially concealing headwear to pass without extra scrutiny would be stupidity. I would expect the same treatment if I walked through with a big western style hat on.

OTOH, it could be an indicator that the wearer is an orthodox Sikh and follows the five Kakaars.

In reality, the TSA personnel are probably just making up for the times they had to travel through Toronto's L. B. Pearson airport back in the day when the Sikhs had the security concession. I've found the TSA to be charming and jovial by comparison.

Seriously, some people just need to get over themselves. If your last name is Mohammed, expect a little extra scrutiny and adopt a good attitude about it. I know a Muslim with that last name and he has done so.

Your friend may choose to turn the other cheek. He shouldn't have to.

The fact that the TSA even cares about his name is another distraction. If everyone is properly screened, it doesn't matter who the hell any of them are. The fact of the matter is that the TSA had proper tools and couldn't maintain them. So, now we have imaging devices that have an unknown impact on the health of travellers that submit to them and you're not even allowed to know the maintenance schedule or standards. We're just supposed to trust that folks who couldn't maintain the safe machines can maintain the machines with unknown safety.

I find these TSA debates to be comical in their absurdity. People gripe about "racial profiling" and how it is wrong to single out someone for screening based on nothing but physical characteristics and/or ethnicity, then they turn around and gripe about kids and old ladies being screened saying "come on now, does that prepubescent/elderly/disabled person LOOK like a terrorist?" You can't have it both ways folks.

-Metal detectors have limited viability in what they can stop.
-The liquid limits are a complete joke all around and do not actually prevent anything.
-The full body scanners were a blatant money grab, and completely ineffective technology (as the inventor has stated numerous times).
-Profiling is a retarded, whether by name or looks.

I find the most amusing thing is that the people that fear the most for airport security are those that are most afraid of the TSA.

I have never had an issue going through security, occasional conversation about whether my belt will set off the metal detector or not (it doesn't never has never will, obviously have to take it off for the body scanners still but most places that I have gone through seemed to have realized that they are a waste of time, money, training, and man power to bother using.)

And having helped my elderly gramma through airport security multiple times in the last couple years I would actually say my experience runs counter to every negative story I have read about TSA. Actually if I have a complaint I would say that the security while bringing her through is horribly lax. Twice at Logan airport they brought her through the metal detector while in the wheelchair (she is quite capable of walking), while she was carrying her purse (they never opened it), and she was wearing several pieces of jewelry. What they did check though was the airport provided wheelchair. At Madison and Milwaukee's airports they had her walk through the metal detectors on her own, (still carrying her purse at Madison again never checked), both times still having jewelry on.

Different instance we were moving a bunch of old things from the same Grandparents house to our place (Boston to Wisconsin) we drove, but in my dad's brief case while we were moving things he put some items in there just to carry so they would not be lost. One of these items was an old hunting knife that looks about like this:
i.ebayimg.com
Dad did not realize that it was still in his brief case and took multiple flights (I think about 8) and one day at home realized the knife was still in the brief case. To the TSA's credit though they did catch my sisters mini-swiss army knife (about an inch and a half long), over the same period.

All around TSA is a false sense of security that gives people a reason to complain.

I just wish EVERYONE opted for a full body pat down. The lines would back up, the TSA would be overwhelmed, and if we kept at it maybe they would go back to metal detectors.

How is it that the rest of the world is fine with normal procedures, and even the extra-cautious Israelis can do it without backscatter and millimeter wave? Because that is a huge waste of taxpayer money, and its only goal is to find drug mules carrying lots of cash.
