ah, alcoholism - the only "disease" that anyone can diagnose for themselves. |

Because we need another asshat saying: You have one drink once a year after inventory. That makes you alcoholic! |

It is stressful until you get tenure. Then it is a 6-figure part-time job. |

As a scientist, a diary keeper, and a wannabe alcoholic, this is relevant to my interests. |

Happy Hours: ah, alcoholism - the only "disease" that anyone can diagnose for themselves. Indeed, you have to "diagnose" it for yourself or you'll never quit drinking, and die from it. And even then some people die, fully aware that they are alcoholics. But you don't know anything about alcoholism, do you? |

cryinoutloud: Happy Hours: ah, alcoholism - the only "disease" that anyone can diagnose for themselves. Indeed, you have to "diagnose" it for yourself or you'll never quit drinking, and die from it. And even then some people die, fully aware that they are alcoholics. But you don't know anything about alcoholism, do you? What bullshiat. Lots of "alcoholics" can de-emphasize drinking when they want/have to, and very few fit that "irresistibly compelled to drink self to death" stereotype. AA is a religious movement, not a psychological therapy. (Whereas $cientology is neither.) And most of the AA members I've known were forced into it by the courts, spouses and/or employers; they were a long way from "hitting bottom," if such a thing exists. It might well be the case that some people choose to drink themselves to death, but it's still a choice -- not an "irresistible force" -- and blaming the booze is a cop-out. When someone plays Frogger in traffic do you blame the Interstate? |
