Fish in a Barrel: Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii: I'm not an IT person but it seems bad that the whole network can be taken down just by throwing soda on one register. Haven't you ever seen an action movie? If smashing a monitor is enough to bring down a whole office network, I'm surprised this didn't take down the whole Internet! If you use a $2 bill at Taco Bell, not only does their register seize up, but the closest Pizza Hut will have its pizza oven break down, and you won't be able to flush the toilet at any WingStreet within 150 miles. |

Current Resident: Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii: FTFA, "...a 30-year-old man is accused of throwing his soda on a cash register at a Taco Bell in Gainesville on Sunday night, shutting down the restaurant's computer network for several hours." I'm not an IT person but it seems bad that the whole network can be taken down just by throwing soda on one register. In all of my experience, I cannot think of anything that would cause one computer to take out an entire network if it were damaged as described in TFA. However, I've seen a lot of sketchy set ups done by people that have had no clue. I've seen servers in unventilated closets, chains of power strips (up to 5 one time) effectively placing 10+ devices on one outlet, wireless routers placed on top of microwaves, and on and on. That said, the store could be a franchise without a dedicated IT staff to properly install and set up equipment. For all anyone knows the store's router could have been sitting next to the register and got soaked, as well. Even if you don't have a dedicated IT staff, common sense tells you to keep critical computer equipment away from customers and food. Also, part of me wonders if this whole "network shutdown" wasn't just some employees excuse to not work for a few hours. |

I'm not an IT person but it seems bad that the whole network can be taken down just by throwing soda on one register. I have to agree with this. Screw the guy and whatever happens to him happens but does the business not have a backup pad system? Are the registers, which stand between customer and server, not designed to have even a single one of those drinks tip over? Taco Bell is an awfully big chain not to have some sort of best practices and backup manual for franchisees. Most fast food workers cannot do simple math..neither can their managers. There is no way they could run that store today w/out computers. You probably once worked in a restaurant/store that actually had people who could do simple computations. Those days are gone....even in a college town like G-ville |

I'm so glad we live in a country where assault on another human being can get you 6-12 months in prison, but costing a corporation money will net you 15 years. God bless America. |

Did the guy do something stupid and wrong for an adult? Yes. Did he do anything 15 years in prison wrong? HELL NO. What the fark is wrong with our country? If he broke in and burgled the place he'd get less time. If he raped the manager he'd get the same prison sentence held over his head. How does this make any sense at all? The fact that barely any of you see something wrong with this is why I am getting out of this country asap and not looking back. |

Taco Bell is an awfully big chain not to have some sort of best practices and backup manual for franchisees. Having seen the insides of much of this stuff, I can tell you that there are a lot of cheap franchise owners who just don't give a damn for reliable equipment. They'll buy the flashiest windowiest crap without regard to things like usability, servicability, or reliability. |

I agree with you, I find that as hard to believe as the amount of money the restaurant "lost", due to the drink getting on one register. I am sure this has never happened before so they haven't had a chance to learn their lesson. ON THE OTHER HAND, this exact thing has happened before and the owners figured out how to make more money off of the insurance than usuall business and they won't have to see THAT picky customer for a long time. The restaurant just takes their best hour of sales EVAR, then tell the cops this is what they lost in revenue. |

I'm not an IT person but it seems bad that the whole network can be taken down just by throwing soda on one register. A felony? A felony? A good attorney could get the entire case dropped. Hell, an armature sleuth could get the whole thing dropped. Fast food registers are very spill resistant. Meaning the pissed off manager probably lied to the cops about the actual damage caused. Probably not realizing that such an exaggeration opens him to a whole set of criminal charges. Were Suresh A. Chapman's attorney to talk with the drones who probably continued to work that register for the rest of the night, he'd have his proof. He could even subpoena the cash register maintenance company to obtain proof of the non-damage. The minute there's any analysis of the manager's lies, the charges get dropped. |

Unfortunatly, I have eaten at these places (not that bad really, get a good deal on TP beforehand), ANY chance not to work is seized upon by the people behind the counter. Any damage not done by the idiot was probably made worse by the employees who probably cleaned out said register, not in a good way. |

CSB: A while back an entire building went offline at work. The network went berserk. Apparently, someone has plugged one end of a network cable into one jack in a conference room switch. Then they plugged the other end of the cable into another jack in the same switch. It may have been a loopback cable but IIRC it was not. There was a firmware bug in the switch that made it go insane and spew packets like mad, nicely DoSing the entire building. It's not cool that an entire building can be taken out by some jerk with a 10 cent network cable and access to a conference room. This kind of thing is possible a lot more in computer networks than I imagine we'd ever guess. |

Actually, the parole violation was only linked to the lack of bail, the head dick at the police department thought the "crime itself" justified the charges. |

The keyboard probably was liquid-resistant. The problem is that the back of the registers are not. I'm guessing that the soda shorted something in one of the machines out, causing a breaker to open. /I've seen worse //Very happy to be out of the food industry |

StrangeQ: I'm so glad we live in a country where assault on another human being can get you 6-12 months in prison, but costing a corporation money will net you 15 years. God bless America. If he was actually sentenced to 15 years for the cash register you might have a point. But that's just the charge he was arrested on (assigned by the beat cop). Maybe not the charge that he will be tried for. And it's unlikely he would get the maximum if he wasn't already a repeat offender. He will probably get more time for the VOP child abuse, than the cash register. All in all, if I was going to get outraged over disproportionate sentencing , I would probably pick a better poster child than a convicted child abuser who gets violent over a fast food order. |
