Who the hell is this guy and why is he suddenly our problem? I'm sure there are millions of unhappy Chinamen who are "ready" to be taken to America on Hillary Clinton's plane. Are we letting all of them down too?

If you've followed the story you'd know he actually wants to stay in China.

And since you obviously wanted to say it, something something preferred nomenclature blah blah blah.

Dumbass actually believed the whole "There will be no reprisals, we'll let you go study at a university..." line that the CCP fed him? That dude is dead as soon as he is out of the news cycle, state security will see to that.

Yeah, he'll be fine. I'm sure they have a nice comfy prison camp he and his family can spent the rest of their lives in.

No but he believed the "we have your family and very bad things will happen to them if you leave" line.

I've followed this story for a while. For some reason he was in the US Embassy. Then he 'said' he wants to stay in China. Then he was taken to a Chinese hospital where his family was taken to visit him. Then he says he wants to be taken to the US because they(Chinese Gov Officials) were making threats on his family's life.

Still don't know who this guy is in the grand scheme of things.

He should have stayed in the embassy and kept making videos to keep the pressure on the Chinese to let his family leave with him. Now that he's back on State Security's playground, he's in trouble.

Now, it may have been threats to his family that got him to leave, but, they're probably screwed even now that he DID leave. Arrrrrggggh.

This guy is nutcase. He got in trouble with the Chinese government because he spoke out against their one child policy. Has the guy checked the Chinese population growth charts? If the people got to have as many children as they wanted, China would be out of food in less than a decade. And if people, like Chen, want to violate the law, then they deserve all the forced abortions, jail time, and beatings that they get. I have no idea why the media is making Chen out to be some kind of hero. He's a terrorist, for God's sake.

If I were the local Chinese authorities, the first thing I'd do is take a hammer to this bastard's feet so he can't sneak around anymore. Then I'd poke his eyes out. He'd say, "Why did you do that?! I'm already blind!" And I'd say, "They found a cure yesterday. Now shut it." Neither he nor his family are allowed to leave their house, not even for food. They need to get tough on this guy or he's going to destroy China from the inside-out.

He's a bit of an odd story. He's a low level Chinese activist and as far as activists go wasn't really that troublesome of one. Then in 2008 he was arrested in a security sweep, which was shocking given how low level he was. In 2009 he was put under house arrest and all that. Now of course he's pissed off the government by escaping house arrest and creating an international media spectacle.

As near as I can tell (this is just from talking with my Chinese coworkers) is the guy made some injudicious remarks at an international conference and pissed off someone in State Security. Basically in 2008 he was too low level to be targeted by the system, it had to be someone in the security department with a personal grudge who went after him. Now of course he's visible and gets the full attention of state security.

Maybe but when they bring his family, who he hasn't seen in years, to the embassy gates and give him the choice go home with them or let them go to prison camps he might not have been thinking rationally. He is too big of a name to disappear (without getting a strongly worded letter at least) His family isn't.

He got in trouble for showing the local government was violating their own laws by forcing women to be sterilized and have abortions. It is exposing the corruption that pissed off the government.

Bad situation for the US. The guy shows up at the embassy and asks for whatever he asked for. The Chinese respond with a promise regarding his family that he found unpalatable at the very least. All the US can do at that point is to present him with the facts and let him make his choice. He should have gotten his family to safety before he made his move. There really was nothing we could do to help him with regards to his family. We can try and keep the spotlight on him like we did with the current president of Myanmar but I am sure that the government used every threat regarding her family that they had available to her and they probably carried out more than a few. Life in the real world is brutal.

Yeah I still don't see where we fit into this picture, couldn't he have just fled to another embassy?

Better yet why did we let him in to our embassy, isn't he similar to an enemy of the state in China? If China ever gets their hands on someone we want they are going to royally screw us over now.

China already refuses to extradite any Chinese national we don't even bother asking anymore and unless the person is an OBL level terrorist I don't think we'd bother.

I did like his plea for someone to tell Hillary what was happening. I'm sure it never occurred to the Secretary of State to keep tabs on what was happening in a major diplomatic crisis with our largest trading partner, who is our rival in Asia.

This.

Dude had a family, no way he was leaving. I just don't know how this is going to play out any better for the family.

The whole story gave me a new perspective on China. I didn;t realize the local regions had that much control. Guy basically wanted local regions to follow what the head office was saying, and got abused for bringing it up to the central govt. Now central govt is mad he made it national news (not suprised about china being more upset over the "crime" being brought tot he international stage than the crime itself). I always thought the central govt had a tighter reign. Of course maybe they do want the local govts to keep birth rates down by whatever means they want.

Um.

He left on his own. We were actually, for a good bit, *not telling china where he was*.

Now that he's out of our reach, I'm not sure there's a whole lot we can do short of
A) The chinese government letting him go (Not bloody likely)
B) Sending in a seal team or something to get him out (REALLY BAD IDEA)

spentmiles is a very skilled troll.

Studies have shown that providing women with education and access to birth control is a far more humane and effective method for keeping down the birth rate Link.

Yeah a lot of the corruption is done at the province or regional level. You have your thing going and you cover for your fellow corrupt officials. Beijing is just where you send wealth and then beg to get wealth back from. Basically as long as your region doesn't do something that makes China look bad, you're left alone unless the central government wants to do some kind of showcase project in your area.

I expect that to change though at some point. The Central government has spent its efforts to bring the military and large companies (in industries that are considered strategic) firmly under its control. Once they're done expending efforts in those areas, they're likely to expend efforts to bring the provincial governments to heel. It's a never ending cycle with 1.6 billion people, by the time they get the provinces under control, they'll need to go bring the military back under control or something.

It's also held true in China (check out domestic concern in China over 'left over women'). The problem is in rural areas (where this guy was active) the children are how shiat gets done on the farm and a son is the only means of social security. When you're old you move in with your son and your daughter in law cares for you. So no son means nowhere to move in.

The education thing is true, but until you mechanize your agricultural sector to the point where child labor is not needed on the farm and come up with other retirement options there are strong economic incentives to spawn. If China lifted one child tomorrow, odds are the urban birth rate wouldn't climb that much, but the birth rate of migrant workers and rural families would spike.

Basically it takes forever to educate 1.6 billion people and make it so the lower class doesn't need child labor as an income source, so you need some other control mechanism until you reach that point.
