Sorry, H-D gets to spend it on good publicity for both sides of the Pacific and for that matter parts H-D sells, installed by labor on the American side. There isn't any particular reason for them to award the guy 10K because his flotsam grounded here.

I was hoping the owner would be alive and get his bike back, good job to the HD people responsible for sending it back. But they pledged 10k for the restoration, not the shipping, I would imagine it costs a lot less then 10k to ship.

like I mentioned in the first thread, I was hoping they would replace only what was needed in order for it to be in good riding condition, but leave the rust and dings for character.

"In my opinion, this is the single greatest environmental pollution event that has ever hit the west coast of North America. The slow-motion aspects of it have fooled an unwitting public. It far exceeds the Santa Barbara or Exxon Valdez oil spills in gross tonnage and also geographic scope. (I was in Prince William Sound during the during the Exxon Valdez oil spill and so have a sense of comparison).

Tens of thousands of miles of coastline from California to the Aleutian Islands are going to be hit with billions of pounds of toxic debris. NOAA's latest estimate is that 1.5 million tons of largely plastic debris will hit the western United States coast. That is 30 billion pounds. We expect Alaska to get the largest percentage of that with much of it lodging on northern Gulf of Alaska beaches. Most of this will be plastic which is full of inherent toxic chemicals that will leach into the environment for generations.

Possibly worse are the millions of containers full of anything from household chemicals to toxic industrial chemicals that are floating our way. They will eventually burst upon our shores...in sensitive inter-tidal spawning and rearing habitat, endangering shorebirds, marine mammals, fish and everything in between. We are already finding empty and partially full containers of tsunami related chemicals and fuel drums along the northern Gulf of Alaska shoreline. The heavier fuller containers will come later because the wind doesn't push them as fast toward the Gulf of Alaska as they are more current driven. The light-weight, high-windage debris such as Styrofoam, buoys, bottles, empty containers and drums have already arrived in staggering quantities.

Here in the states, Harley riders are useful because they are generally affluent, middle-aged white males. They are a huge demographic and they vote and spend. That keeps the politicians from using motorcyclists as their excuse to continue passing superfluous laws or making empty campaign promises to show they are tough on safety (a variation on the "won't someone think of the children?" BS). Not to mention it raises awareness of motorcycling in the cager world. Everybody knows somebody that has a Harley, right?
They are a nice shield for the rest of us who actually love wrenching on and riding our bikes. Sure, it's a double-edged sword, what with all of the dumbasses wrecking every weekend and the loud-assed pipes but they keep the attention off of the rest of us by their sheer numbers and financial clout.
So, my hats off to you, Mr. Weekend Warrior. We understand and appreciate you and you give us a never ending source of entertainment!

Lol. I ride a Suzuki SV 650, my 2 bikes before that was a GSX-R750 and KLR 250, all made in Japan. Oh yeah, I had a Yamaha Warrior too. Japan does make the best bikes IMO. I've always liked HD, but never enough to actually buy one. I always thought of them as old technology and way over priced. Last summer me and my brother went to a dealer who was having a ride event, you could ride any new Harley they brought. I chose the XR1200 since it was the most similar to my SV, I had no time to sit on it and figure out where anything was because the group was leaving as soon as I was on it. Well anyway, that was a sweet ride and I would have loved to take it home, it was the easiest bike I ever rode. But for a 1200, lacked in power and was way too much $. My 2001 SV is a little faster, costs almost half as much, so I guess I proved to myself they are still over priced, but much better then they used to be. As for HD management idiots, that's another story.

Given that they have so many Japaneese bike manufacturers, how common do you think Harleys are in Japan? And it's not just ANY Harley Davidson, either, now is it? It'll be a factory-restored Harley, in Japan. And a very historically-significant one, at that. You may not like Harley Davidson motorcycles, but this one won't be "a piece of shiat". I wonder what the auction value on that thing would be?

As a life-long, now grey-bearded, motorcyclist I have managed to become almost immune to the stupid stereotypes emanating from the non-riding public, but I am really annoyed when they come from fellow riders.

Since I started riding in the '70s, I've owned excellent bikes from Japan, England, Italy, Germany, and lately from the US. I have also found that the stereotypes we associate with each tend to be pretty innacurate once we actually get to know the people we apply them to.

Presuming that the end was open when he found it (likely), then my guess is that it ended up open end up, partially full of water (and motorcycles, etc). Barring getting swamped, filled with rain, or leaking from the bottom, it is essentially a boat with ballast. The alternative would be if it were turned upside down with the opening downwards and air trapped in it, but the motorcycle (unless tethered), would have been long gone.
