He was first spotted in Albany and didn't get caught until New Paltz? I get that you want to be safe about catching him, but they're not exactly close to each other.

Though I guess if you're doing 170 then they're only a half-hour or so apart.

The 90 isn't a freeway.

It also doesn't go anywhere near New Paltz.

I always wondered what the difference was between a freeway and an expressway. Nothing's called a freeway around here. Just Googled it and it seems almost interchangeable.

Nope, that's just where it started. He must have got on 87. And doing this on the Thruway strikes me as a bad idea when you consider that a toll booth is going to be involved at some point.

In 1999, off the showroom floor, the Hyabusa did 194mph for less than $10k.

There are no freeways in the Northeast, we call them highways. And I'm pretty sure they're the same thing, and it's just a linguistic difference like soda/pop.

To traffic engineers expressways do not have as much access control as freeways. Expressways may have intersections where freeways have ramps. Residents of the Northeast use expressway as a synonym of freeway.

Also, if you're going 170 on a bike and get caught you deserve a FAIL tag, not WEIRD.

Also also, save the high speed runs for the middle part of I-88. With curves and cops and traffic the Thruway near Albany isn't a good place to go over 100.

There's a long, straight, downhill stretch coming into Harrisonburg, Virgina near JMU. I could break 240 MPH on my bike, coming down that hill. Every object around me was just a long, smeared blur. I probably should be dead, but it was exhilarating the few times I did it. Man, I was pedaling my ass off.

If you're planning on going 170 mph on public roads, why not pull your tags before you head out? You've got to know you're likely to get chased, so why not make it so they actually have to catch you to bust you?

Yep. Different story if it was the Northway (I-87 North of Albany, up to the Canadian border). No toll booths, so you could in theory get far enough ahead of the police so that you are out of sight, take one of the regular u-turn areas, double back, and get off at your first opportunity and 'blend in' to the local traffic, especially if you are familiar with the lesser traveled roads that lead to wooded areas where you can pull onto what is essentially a foot path and 'disappear' into the undergrowth, and watch the state trooper go zooming by.

Not that I would know anything about that, and even if I did, the statute of limitations would have surely run out by now.

Right. I thought experienced bikers know that cops aren't going to try too hard to pull them over if they are moving at extremely excessive speeds for safety reasons?

Or just dirty it up so it's hard to read. Motorcycle plates are pretty small, and you have to be reasonably close to read them.

I think it is safe to say he didnt think his cunning plan through, since as others have pointed out he is doing 170 on the NYS thruway (toll road) in an area which has a very heavy police presence due to the prolific drug traffic along the NYC to Montreal corridor . You can get away with this on stretches between SYR and ROC and ROC and BUF,

Pretty much, though it really depends on the cop, how busy/pissed he is, and department policy. I've had them try to chase at 150, and had them just give a wave at 100. Given, this was almost 20 years ago...I assume most have gone to more of a "no chase" rule for bikes, simply because it isn't worth the risk of killing someone over a speeding violation.

in before the cagers vs bikers hate fest. I just hope this doesn't induce copy cat attempts to surpass the reported top speed.

CSB or not, whatever. Used to work in a restaurant with a kid, barely old enough to have a license, sure as hell wasn't mature enough. Got himself a first year datsun 240-z. stupid good deal, how the fark he managed that I don't know. It was immaculate, not the slightest bit of rust or corrosion anywhere. In the hands of this manchild moron. Being short, he also had full blown napoleonic syndrome going on. The kind that takes martial arts, and then breaks the jaw of another kid at school for some silly school grounds shenanigans. Wrapped up tighter than Oprah's corset. Anyway, his goal was to make his car into a 160 mph machine. The same kid who went around begging for the donut spare tires in peoples' trunks so he could get his car to work. No shiat, one day he showed up with 3 of the mini spares and one full size tire. "Rode kind of funny." No shiat, einstein. Finally gets a fresh set of skinny tires on it and starts challenging the police officers to clock him as he drives by at top speed.

Dumbass shows up late for work one night, proudly showing off his speeding ticket for 120 mph. "How the fark aren't you in jail?" "Jail? Why would I be in jail for a speeding ticket?"

"Who gave you this ticket?"

gives the name of the cop, who is a regular at the restaurant. I see him later. "Thanks for letting dumbass come to work tonight." He sighs, says the kid pulls up to him as he's sitting in his speed trap spot on a nice long straight, begs him to clock his car and write a ticket and make it look real.

So he did. Plus, he wasn't required to arrest him, so he didn't. So, it wasn't much of a surprise when I got the phone call from speedy who said his license was suspended for 6 months and he couldn't drive to work anymore. Poor kid sounded so sand bagged, he never had any idea that this would be a consequence. Never saw him again, haven't seen his name in any accident reports...yet.

My sister works as a ER nurse in Albany medical center.....the stories I've heard. Oh, she always refers to motorcycle riders, me included, as "organ donors".

BTW, Cops will always chase a bike in Jersey. The place is so built out, there is no where you could even get up to 100mph before you needed to stop or slow down.

170mph is just stupid. I never went over 155mph on my bike. You have to think safety.

And for fark's sake. If you get tagged doing over a 100, you might as well just keep going. You're not gonna like the ticket you get if you stop.
(And get the fark off the road, so they don't radio ahead. But don't take the 1st exit either, because that's where they're gonna check. Take the 2nd or 3rd. Get a burger or something. Hide your bike behind something and chill out for an hour or so)

295 South b/t Delaware and Cherry Hill is actually a pretty good place to wind out your bike if you can't get to a track.

In less-desolate Massachusetts a pack of bikers was doing triple digits on I-91. Cops gave chase. Two stopped. Four fled. Two of them must have found a good little back road to wait it out because they were never seen again. The last two drove past a new traffic surveillance camera after they got off the highway. They got caught.

I went to Montreal by bus once and coming back through that customs station wasn't fun. I had nothing and never do drugs, but for some reason the dog picked out my bag so I got searched and questioned. Going into Canada was a breeze though.

90 is the Thruway except when it's not, which is when it's the Berkshire Spur, or when it's just I-90 east of Albany, after it stops being part of the Thruway. Then, I-87 is the Thruway. Except when it's not. It's the Thruway south of Albany, but it's the Northway north of Albany.

If you are in Troy and want to get to Albany, you might want to head South on the Northway, and to avoid tolls, you should try to avoid the Thruway. Another option is to take route 7 to route 787 to route 87. But make sure you take Interstate Route 787, and not State Route 787, as state route 787 doesn't follow the Northway South, but rather goes into Latham and Cohoes.

TOTALLY SIMPLE, GUYS.

I would do stupid shiat on my GSXR 750 when I was 25 too. It has been found that the part of your brain which controls judgement isn't fully developed until at least 25. I tend to believe this. I nearly lost my life 3 times and went to jail for a stint before I turned 26.

Actually, in NY, it's called the "New York State Thruway". Rather than "tollway" which is what it really is, which is Super-Ultra-Retarded because Cuomo #1 had a great idea to push out the date to remove the tollbooths decades ago (which gave his successors the same "great" idea -- douchebags, all) when they were supposed to be pulled out in order to keep the revenues coming in to pay for a bloated Thruway Authority (whom no one seems to have control over), NY State budget that was already out of control even then. Slowly (and almost miraculously), there have been successful campaigns across the state to remove the odd toolbooth here and there. One successful tactic was a campaign to pay tolls in pennies (it worked for one tollbooth in Buffalo). Which doesn't seems o bad until realizing that some tolls are a dollar or more.

The Thruway's a different thing, I was just talking that type of highway in general. Around NYC they're all called expressways (LIE, BQE, Cross Bronx, Van Wyck, Clearview, etc.). Then there are the parkways but that's another category since trucks aren't allowed.

Agreed. I think the one thing that we can all take away from this is that NOTHING is free in NY. or NYC. Unless you live in a high-rise with a telescope. Then, peep shows are free.
