Remember David Barton's appearance this week on The Daily Show? When he spoke about a five year old who was yelled at by a teacher for praying before eating his lunch in the school cafeteria? Yeah, about that

I sorta felt bad when I saw the interview, because the minute Barton opened his mouth and I heard his accent, I thought "This won't go well...".

/I should start Wikipedia'ing the guests as soon as they're mentioned, to see whether we've got actual scientists or serious jouranlists, or just politicians, pundits and preachers.

They don't even need to do that. Much of what David Barton says are outright lies. For example, he continues to attribute quotes to Jefferson that Jefferson never said, even after being corrected on them.

Tell that to a friend of my mother's.

She had the gall to say she was being persecuted for her Christian beliefs by the rest of her family (possible Native American, she never would say what religion they were or if they were atheists) after her dad died.

I strongly suspect she was being obnoxious (because it's her style) and was asked to either stop or tone it down.

So, as a note to religious people everywhere. Being asked to tone it done is not persecution.

Being asked to leave my front porch is not persecution.

Ok, I usually have the Mormon boys do some yard work with me. They can pull weeds for the Lord, I can have my work load slightly lessened. It's a win/win. Last time I gave them quite a few ears of sweet corn too to take back and share with the rest of the missionaries.

unchellmatt: Really, all you have to do in order to disprove Barton is, well... read. The Library of Congress has "The Jefferson Papers", which consists of 27,000 documents written by Jefferson. All you have to do is read them. In it, you'll find that Jefferson considered himself not Christian, but "Deist". You'll also find his revulsion for organized religion, but more entertaining is you'll find his opinions on pre-revolution France. Quite a few similarities to what's going on in the US today.

Barton said, very clearly, in the interview that Jefferson abhorred most organized religion.

It has been my experience that some self identified "christians", neither attend church, have ever read the bible, or know the 10 commandments. These "christians" tend to be politicians and anti-XXXX folks.

Does it make sense a teacher called an autistic kid a "bastard", or that a week doesn't go by without a story of a teacher sleeping with a student? What about the teacher that grabbed a student, shoved him under a desk, and told him that's what the Nazi's did to the Jews? You assume that all teachers are a bastion of reasonableness. That's not a good assumption.

Meh not the weirdest Christian persecution fantasy I've heard. I think the one that takes the cake is Jess LaVey who was claiming to be Anton LaVey's son and renounced the church of Satan. He had all these stories about what Anton did to groom him to take over the church of Satan and it all was bull shiat.

Is he still out there selling his crap to Christians?

They offered to do service work, so I let them.

They haven't been back since. We were getting them every 3-6 months for 3 years, after having them work; no more missionaries.

We'll see if the trend continues this summer.

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Like the lawyer said, have you ever been a school cafeteria as an adult? You are not going to punish the one kid quietly praying.

yert, meat0918, quoting on mobile is a pain, so "Stuff".

Yeah, that's the good and the bad thing about the Bible, is it's open to a variety of interpretations.

As an example, with meat's quote, I take that as talking to people who seek you out. Baptism without belief is worthless, and teaching (to me) implies voluntary pupils.

I don't get how anyone thinks they can show someone the glory of God by beating them about the head and shoulders with a Bible.
