Remember David Barton's appearance this week on The Daily Show? When he spoke about a five year old who was yelled at by a teacher for praying before eating his lunch in the school cafeteria? Yeah, about that

"I can tell you he was not reprimanded for praying," said Kenneth Brostron, the school's lawyer. "Do you think it makes sense that the teachers would look around the cafeteria and target the one student who was praying quietly at his seat?"

can't see how to argue with that. what teacher doesn't love to get a second of quiet from his/her students?

Wasn't there one about praying loudly on the street corners so that everyone can see how devout you are? They keep that one.

The worst of these apocryphal stories is the one about the guy who somehow got dosed in sodium and was taken to the emergency room to have all his skin removed because his sweat was setting off 2 foot flames.

One of the main problems (that is, retardants to human life advancing) is that there is, by necessity, an anti-intellectual bias to evangelicalism, which is an emotionally based movement from the late 19th century. The fact that non-political (read: agnostic) religion is fairly new (and will hopefully advance) is also there.

But we are still stuck with willfully ignorant numbnuts that prop up this endless circus tent of BS, demanding that they become ringleaders for a bunch of clowns.

Right, because nothing keeps an interview zipping along like stopping it every 2 minutes with "hang on, let me Google that", followed by 4 minutes of silent surfing by the host.

Snopes search, Raymond Raines:

"Sorry, no matches were found containing raymond raines."

They're good and all, but relying on them to be your one source of information is just as bad as relying on chain e-mails. Hell, they say so themselves.

Not sure of the point of that link... it's a documentary about the failures of the educational system.

What does that have to do with Christians lying for two decades in the press, to back up a situation that simply isn't happening?

Really, all you have to do in order to disprove Barton is, well... read. The Library of Congress has "The Jefferson Papers", which consists of 27,000 documents written by Jefferson. All you have to do is read them. In it, you'll find that Jefferson considered himself not Christian, but "Deist". You'll also find his revulsion for organized religion, but more entertaining is you'll find his opinions on pre-revolution France. Quite a few similarities to what's going on in the US today.

I'm not going to quote any of them. I'm just going to say that while 27,000 documents is certainly daunting, all you have to do is read them.

Barton, I might note, has already had to rescind "citations" he's used in the past. He is not known for, shall we say, honesty or facts. Again, all it takes is a small amount of reading and searching. The man is full of shiat.

It is under constant attacks, they're call logic, reasoning, and common sense. And don't you know they're trying to teach those threats in school! They aren't doing very well, but they're trying.

Wait a minute. I'm not sure whether this happened or not. The kid says it was because he was praying. The school's lawyer said it was because the kid was fighting. Why are people quick to believe a lawyer over the kid?

Back in middle school a number of my friends were VERY Christian. And knowing that I was an atheist, they would get very upset that "Atheists like you don't let us pray in school!".

To which I let them know I didn't have a problem with their private prayers, what I had a problem was with teacher-led prayers and encouraged them to pray before their lunches and to notice that no one would stop them.

After a couple of school lunch prayers, they realized they were wrong and shut up about it after that.
