I just love how the dog checks behind the monitor several times before checking on the cat in the chair.

I hear the Scooby-Doo "ruh?" every time the dog turns its head to one side.

Our (mentally retarded) Yorkie is like this. He'll watch videos of other animals, and constantly sniff the screen or look behind it, and eventually run around looking for the hidden animal he can see/hear, but not smell.

The TV show Game of Thrones also sets him off whenever they feature a raven. He's spent 30 minutes searching for the pesky raven.

My wife at one point made a video of him, played it back on the computer, and then made a video of him watching the video of himself on her laptop.

Hmm...I always though that animals don't fall for video or mirrors because they also rely on scent.

My cat, Ramsey, "watched" the "window" of our fireplace, looking for squirrels. He's even "chased" a squirrel (through the glass, of course--he's inside only) from the sliding glass door to the next "window" aka our fireplace screen. He's a dork.

That's funny, reminds me of when my dog chases our cats down the stairs and then runs into the room that the stairs go under to cut them off at the pass.

If any animal at all, especially dogs, is on our television. My dogs only reaction is to charge the TV and take no prisoners. This plan is of course rock solid until he gets to the tv screen and comes to an abrupt stop.

So cute. What wonderful animals. And it doesn't look solely like he's confused, it's like he's actually thinking it through.

I don't know if he was actually watching the screen.... it looked like he had his ear and nose down by the speaker, and tilted his head when he heard jingling of the cat's collar on the laptop video.
I think it's just a coincidence the dog went over to the cat in its box.

I don't think it was conincidence (the sniff was too deliberate), but he was definitely reacting to the sound.

Actually looked like he was more concerned about how the cat was going to get out of the tiny box...

Confused my cat like this once. Shortly after my daughter was born (but she was in the NICU for a while) I was playing some video of her getting her first bath at the hospital, and the cat jumped up on the table and started rubbing against the laptop like he wanted to sooth her.

I love the tilting of its head to either side. It is saying "my senses are confused" and it thinks that orienting its eyes and ears in a different plane might clear up the confusion.

Anyways, my dog could give two shiats about the TV or computer, but both our cats show interest if there are animals on TV.

Just go to youtube if you want to know what's popular on youtube before news sites report them being popular on youtube.

And this site is more about amusing headlines people submit, at least outside of TF. So sometimes it takes a little while for a decent headline to pop up and make its way to the unwashed masses.

Actually has to do with their frame rate perception. A lot of animals wouldn't see a moving image as you or I would at certain FPS.

My dog used to play with the other dog in the mirror all the time. He was not a very smart dog, but then neither was the one in the mirror, so it balanced out. Perfectly, in fact.

I have a five year old pug who does the same thing, real tough and brave when the animals are on t.v. but when he sees a dog in real life he just wants to play and he won't go anywhere near cats, just warily circles them from a safe distance.

As far as I know, from vets, dogs' eyes don't possess the necessary biology to be able to see TV or movies (since it's like 60 frames a second or so), they are solely responding to the sound.

Cats, maybe, but not most breeds of dogs.

/my dog responds to Jeremy Wade's voice on River Monsters... stands transfixed.

Pugs can see t.v. maybe its the oversized eyes but without animal sounds on t.v. my dog is asking every animal that comes across the screen, "Hey, what are you doing in here?!?"

I would love to see citations about dogs seeing TV and not understanding it.

Lady friend from a while ago had a dog the would watch the tube and never really react unless it was a Bear or a Cow!
Never reacted to anything else, lions roaring or Hippos (animal planet was a favorite) . But the afore mentioned animals elicited a WILD reaction from a very laid back dog.
Barking and sometimes licking the TV. Strange dog. I miss him and the lady friend.

I only ever seem to notice them in the Video tab though (the least visited used tab on FARK). And no, I've never seen FARKers go to 4Chan, Funnyjunk, 9Gag or Reddit and talk about how "awesome" we are.

It's the Hz. Sound is probably the bigger factor.

The fact that dogs have better flicker perception than humans is consistent with the data that suggests that they have better motion perception ability than people. It also answers a commonly asked question as to why the majority of dogs don't seem to be interested in the images on the television-even when those images are of dogs. The image on a standard television screen is updated and redrawn 60 times per second. Since this is above a human's flicker resolution ability of 55 Hz, the image appears continuous and the gradually changing images give us the illusion that it is continuous. Because dogs can resolve flickers at 75 Hz, a TV screen probably appears to be rapidly flickering to dogs. This rapid flicker will make the images appear to be less real, and thus many dogs do not direct much attention to it. Even so, it is true that some dogs ignore the apparent flickering of the television and seem to respond to dogs and other interesting images on the TV screen if they are interesting enough. However, changes in technology are beginning to change the number of dogs that watch TV. High-resolution digital screens are refreshed at a much higher rate so even for dogs there is less flicker, and we are getting more reports of pet dogs who are very interested when various nature shows containing images of animals moving.

Still, people are sometimes surprised to find that although their dog responds when there is a dog on the screen, or perhaps some other animal running swiftly, it does not respond to cartoon images of dogs. This really is a testimony to how good a dog's ability is to see and accurately interpret moving images. When a dog sees a cartoon canine he recognizes that it is moving, but the movements of an animated figure are not a precise rendering of the pattern of movements of a live animal. Therefore he sees something moving, but it is not a dog or any other real animal of interest.
