... Redflex Traffic Systems, issued over $5 million worth of tickets. After the state government and the Australian company took their share, $1.3 million remained in the municipality ... Anybody know what percentage went to the state and what percentage went to Redflex? I think I'm in the wrong line of work.... |

Anybody know what percentage went to the state and what percentage went to Redflex? I think I'm in the wrong line of work.... I believe nearly all traffic fines that exceed 30 percent of a city's previous year's total general revenues must be paid to the state. Could be wrong. |

After rubbing the alcohol out of my eyes, i realize my reply did not have anything to do with your question. Carry on... |

Am I the only one concerned that the city police force has sniper rifles in the first place, never mind the source of funding used for them? If a city police department needs snipers, then I believe they have already failed their job of keeping the peace. |

Pearland cops are worse. They have bazookas. |

mikdeetx: Pearland cops are worse. They have bazookas. Really??? Even Houston cops don't have bazookas.. Remind me to stay out of Pearland... (rarely goes, I stay on this side of Dixie Farm Road)... I go to League City almost weekly (over involved in the local school district, main off is there), I hardly think sniper rifles are needed in that town.... drug dogs yes, snipe rifles, no... |

I don't see why anyone would give a damn, as long as its being used to better the police department it's a win for everyone who lives there. |

To serve warrants on people with outstanding parking tickets? |

| wambu I've always said that the best use of the death penalty as a deterrent was for speeding and red-light running. A police sniper in a tower near the intersection would work wonders and after a few well-publicized deaths, nobody would be breaking the first damn traffic law. /otherwise, death penalty not so much a deterrent. |

By the way, the observation platform is never manned. It has dark tinted windows, and just looks like it is. |

"$3750 for tactical entry rifles" "$7800 for sniper rifle scopes" Not sure if the author meant "entry rifles" or "entry-level rifles", but if the latter then odds are the department purchased exactly three of these: ![]() Remington 700P, probably in .308 win, and they paid full price. $7800 means they didn't skimp on glass for them, either. |

Dammit, wrong photo. ![]() Had one. Bang for the buck, best rifle Remington makes. Still would avoid because the bolt design is shiat, and I'll sacrifice the lock time if it means not having to worry about the extractor breaking or bolt handle coming off. |

Considering that police work is about as dangerous as a construction worker and 10th overall in the US, I don't believe that all of these toys are needed. Further, if police actually had fewer toys, they might actually have to reconsider how to do things carefully so nobody gets hurt. Instead they go all para-military, and dogs, sometimes people get shot while serving low-level drug warrants. /Fear and balance of power is sometimes a good thing. |

How about if we just ended the war on drugs? /when did "wanting to feel good" become a bad thing? |

Our police chief recently got fired for making the mistake of documenting the police departments ticket quota as well. Must have ended around the third week of every month, they would be all over the public like stink on shiat. Wondered where they were getting the $ for all those shiny new police cars. The only police dept more militant than them is over in the People's Republic of Webster nearby /yes, I'm from league city, not surprised |
