Came here hoping "cracking open a few cold ones" was a euphemism.

That was my first thought as well.

You're a sick bastard, Ed.

In Tuesday's primary election, Vangundy is running unopposed for re-election.

Coroner is an elected position?

Well, there is stiff competition.

i wouldn't mind doing her. but only if she laid in a bathtub of cold water for a half hour and, you know, didn't move.

Oh, good. I was really hoping this wasn't a Kentucky coroner. I work with coroners on a daily basis and am glad it's not one of mine!

Coroner is basically "on call", correct?

So if there is a death, they have to come to the scene regardless of what they are doing, right?

Guess leading a life of virtual sobriety would help...or having an assistant coroner.

No, someone dug up some dirt on the other guy who wanted to run.

Did she start laughing and insulting the dead person or just sat down and looked really sad? I am guessing she started doing something really inappropriate to draw attention to her drunken state. It would make a good comedy skit.

Maybe barf on the deceased and then laughed at him for being dead.

The coroner was stumbling and swaying at the scene, court documents say. She drove her personal vehicle to the death scene, because she said she thought she might be too intoxicated to drive the county-owned van.

That's career suicide.

I imagine she'd already been tagged as the type to do this sort of thing.

She doesn't want to do it but was boxed in to the position by her half brother

Coroner is an elected position?

Yup, depending on the location. Back in my old county in Georgia, the coroner was also one of the funeral home directors. I haven't done the research, but I think that could possibly be a common trend. Plus a coroner would need some medical training, and mortuary training would provide that. Which would also limit the number of people who could run for the position.

Nah, she's a Republican in Indiana, they'll just blame Obama.

/Our coroner's son molested his 12 year old step sister and they didn't even bother to look for a primary challenger, that's how safe the assume he is.

Next thing you know, they'll be saying the Coroner can't crack open a few cold corpses after putting back a few beers either.

Did they bother to unearth any actual evidence that he did this? I find it hard to believe that he was elected under such grave circumstances.

I actually just watched a Frontline documentary on death investigators last night... Oh come on it was on netflix and I've already watched all the other 15 year old TV series they have...

Anyway, I guess it's pretty much an elected position everywhere, with a lot of places having no requirements at all. Basically you need to be able to identify a dead body from a living one, and get a bunch of people to vote for you.

This article doesn't tell the complete story. The Indianapolis Star quoted the sheriff as saying that she didn't even need to be there because the deputy coroner was already there.

There is a pretty good Frontline on this. It turns out that there is a pretty wide range of training requirements for coroners across the country so someone with very little training can end up as coroner in some back woods part of the country.

Indeed; and they're not always the brightest of the bunch either: New York coroner charged with throwing keg party for minors

No, in fact the locals complained that it was covered too much. There might have been 5 articles over 6 months.

Back in the day, coroner used to be almost as important as a judge; they basically had the role of district attorney and county clerk in addition to taking the dead, and that carried over into the US. They slowly lost these powers starting from the mid-1800s, as offices became more specialized.
