I tried to join the Marines when I was 25 and was rejected. I figured if I was going to go in the Forces I might as well go all the way. Nothing against the Army, but they were going to accept me. Of course this was right in the middle of the Iraq and Afghanistan war. If I couldn't have the Marines then I didn't want anything. God bless you, kid.

I was there to help guide one of the little kids with cancer around Quantico in 1999. It was for Make-A-Wish, and he got some cammies and dress blues cut to his size. We took him to the range, gave him a ride in a CH-46, let him yell at some Privates. He had a blast. He died a few months later, but he said being out with us was the most fun he'd ever had.

Friend's mom had breast cancer, and due to the chemo she's cancer free in the breast area. But then she got lung cancer due to the chemo.

If you have a better method please feel free to share with the rest of the class.

It sucks. It's a horrible treatment. But it works better than anything else we have right now (for certain types of cancer it's the only treatment available).

Gotta work with the tools you've got.

MajorGroove: It takes a strong kid to make it through what he made it through. It takes a strong person to stand by a dying child. I'm grateful for anyone and everyone who goes out of their way to ease the pain of a dying child and his/her family. It really does make a difference.

Stories like this are the reason I decided against a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia. I can maintain enough objectivity to do my job well with adults, but it's way to hard to look at a kid my daughter's age going through a terminal illness and not immediately think of my daughter. Or worse, put myself in the parents position. I'm thankful for you guys who can do it day in and day out and not take it home with you. Better you than me.
