| Demetrius Never been a Yankee fan, but Mariano has always been all class and a great, great pitcher. Hopefully his career doesn't end this way. He deserves better. /Sox fan |

Whelp, that's his season. Demetrius: Never been a Yankee fan, but Mariano has always been all class and a great, great pitcher. Hopefully his career doesn't end this way. He deserves better. /Sox fan Nah. Not his arm. No reason for him not to be back, as long as the knee is reparable. |

His contract is up at the end of this year, and when reporters asked him about his plans for next year, he said something like "I've made my decision, but I'm not going to tell you guys yet". The consensus was that he basically meant "Yeah, this is it, but I'm not officially announcing anything right now." If his season is done, there is a really good chance that his career is done. /I really hope that this isn't as bad as it looks |

Injured while pitching, sure. Injured while catching fly balls? No way. |

| Triumph GAT_00: Nah. Not his arm. No reason for him not to be back, as long as the knee is reparable. In the mechanics of pitching, a healthy knee is every bit as important as a healthy arm. |

| syrynxx I bet he shags like a mynx. |
| johnnylarue He shouldn't have shagged now but shagged later. /Oh, behave! |
| Triumph GAT_00: Easier to repair a knee than Tommy John. It's supposedly just a strain, but if he had severely blown out his ACL, he could have been hanging up his cleats. |

| SilentStrider Guess this shows why, if you play fantasy baseball, you should never pay for saves. Even a guy considered automatic like Rivera can get hurt. And as. Phils fan, I too hope his career doesn't end like this. |
| cameroncrazy1984
Awesome throw by that third baseman to end the game, though. Ha ha, the Yankees lost to the Royals. |
| Di Atribe Triumph: It's supposedly just a strain, but if he had severely blown out his ACL, he could have been hanging up his cleats. I hope you're right & it's just a strain. I like the Yankees to have all of their weapons available to them when they get beat. /hate to see the good ones get hurt //yankees suck |
| SilentStrider Espn just said its a torn ligament inhis knee, didn't specify which. |
| SilentStrider Or maybe it is an acl, not sure. |
| thomps yeah this isn't the way i want him to end his career. i want him to end it like he ended last season: pitching in a losing effort to the tigers in the playoffs. get better, mo. |
| Di Atribe I just heard on the radio that his ACL is torn and his career is over. :( He didn't say what his source was, but.... seems legit |

Yes, when I think of sports news, the huffington post is the first place I go... |

The guy who hit the ball Rivera was going after was hit by Jayson Nix, called up today. Talk about a way to start your MLB career... |
| thomps cameroncrazy1984: The guy who hit the ball Rivera was going after was hit by Jayson Nix, called up today. Talk about a way to start your MLB career... not even one at-bat into his career and he's already got pitchers shaking at the knees. |
| Rincewind53 Goddamn. An ACL tear will take at least two months to come back from, and if this is really how he goes out... It's not the way it should have been, damn it. Legend like him should go out with a save in the top of the 9th on the final game of the World Series. |
| cameroncrazy1984
Rincewind53: An ACL tear will take at least two months to come back from, Uh, and by that you mean 6 to 7 months? |

Well, it sounds like an ACL tear, so I guess your "reparable" theory will get put to the test. |
| Triumph And for perspective, Terrell Suggs just tore his achilles tendon and he's likely out for all next football season. /Good thing the Ravens drafted a linebacker |
| robsul82 Poor Mo. The best closer ever and his career might've ended on that fluky shiat. So farking sad. |
| Harv72b cameroncrazy1984: Rincewind53: An ACL tear will take at least two months to come back from, Uh, and by that you mean 6 to 7 months? If it is indeed a torn ACL, I have to think that at 42 years of age he decides to just hang it up. It's a crap way for the best closer in MLB history to end his career, but looking at the surgery, then the long recovery & rehabilitation period, then coming back to an uncertain role & possibly with diminished physical abilities... Sad day for baseball if that ends up being the case. |
| nmrsnr Given that it's a torn ACL it really looks like Mo has pitched his last game. And while it sucks that this is the way he leaves the game, I'm sure the Yankees will throw him one hell of a retirement party, and by next year it won't matter how he left, but how he played the game. Last man to wear #42 in baseball retires at 42. Fitting enough. |
| SilentStrider nmrsnr: Last man to wear #42 in baseball retires at 42. Fitting enough. I'm curious how thats going to work whennthey go to retire 42 im the Bronx. I'm guessing it will go down as the only number retired for two players on the same team. |
| ThatGuyGreg Well, it's not as if they had a need for a closer anymore this season anyway... The frakking ROYALS?! OK. Ok. Breathe. |

| torch That's a shame. He will always be a freaking legend. Still, it's pretty amazing how many healthy seasons he had. /Sox fan, in theory anyway. |
| Harv72b GIS search: the greatest closer of all time. Link /That's about as unanimous as the internet ever gets. |

| SpikeStrip don't blame shaggy. wasn't him. |

hammettman ![]() Knows a few things about proper shagging. /career end by injury just sucks |

I feel bad for Rivera but happy that the Yankees are farked. |

And the yanks will pilfer another top pitcher from a struggling small market team, further exemplifying the economic imbalance in baseball. /yanks suck //tribes in first place still |
| wxboy The Tigers should offer Valverde for Granderson. |

I still think he gives it a shot, if only because that's such an incredibly lame ending. |

The ACL and the meniscus were torn, according to everything I've been reading/have heard. Which is just farking fabulous. I can't believe that the last time I saw Mo pitch might be the last time I see Mo pitch. What a gut punch. This season has just been so so wonderful, and it just got even better. Not. /Yankees fan //really devastated right now ///hopes Mo comes back for next season for a real send-off |

Let me get this straight - MLB teams let their million-dollar stars shag balls at BP, and not the 20-30 remaining dudes on their roster who sit around the entire game? I'm sure Riviera's a swell guy, and this injury sucks for them, but geez - what the hell is he doing running around out there? |
| sephjnr
Philosoraptor: If he's injured shagging fly balls, shouldn't that lead to John Thomas surgery? |

robsul82: Poor Mo. The best closer ever and his career might've ended on that fluky shiat. So farking sad. Truth. Though this happening at 42 years old isn't quite as bad as getting your career ended early like Tony C or Munson. |

Sucks...between performance and on+off-field behavior, I don't think there's any other player you could look up to more than this guy. He seemed unstoppable, and I always wondered how his career would end. Hopefully it won't be this way. |
