oday, the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, based in Canada, has just five convents in Maine and Massachusetts with 56 sisters. The youngest is 64 years old, and it's been more than 20 years since a new member joined.

At one time, women would join the sisterhood through word of mouth or their personal interactions with sisters, said Lachance, vocation director for the Good Shepherd Sisters. But now, many younger women aren't even aware it's a choice.

This is a Sam Kinison sort of thing. How many women are there in ME? Now, how many are interested in religious service? Right. So go where those folks are like AL, MI, you know the Bible Belt. You'll find plenty of wimmin there.

There are a lot of religious traditions that have sexual abstinence as a theme for holy men or holy women on the path to enlightenment, as part of a general asceticism.

I think the big turn-off about the nuns as monastic orders is that they have no voice. Nobody within their community, no matter how righteous or holy or enlightened has any real say in anything. They all get told what to do by a patriarchal bureaucracy that doesn't seem to have any respect for them as fellow monastics.

To a certain extent, that doesn't matter, because monastic types aren't in it to climb any power ladders--not the "for real" ones. That's kinda counter to the whole point. Monastic types mostly want to be let alone to be what they are.

But that's the point---with the patriarchal bureaucracy always over their heads, the nuns as monastics are not let alone to be what they are.

And to be a Catholic nun (other religions have nuns, too) you have to be okay with that. Which partly explains why they have trouble finding nuns.

On the other hand, that patriarchal bureaucracy provides one heck of a structural support on which to build monastic communities, so there is a plus side they're getting in exchange for that down side.

The Catholic Church encourages their lay people to breed like rabbits, so a few nuns living celibate lives isn't going to hurt them. I suspect most nuns are homely, asexual or lesbian, so that sex within the bounds of Catholic doctrine is not an option anyway.

Years ago I worked at a Catholic High School owned by some nuns. Mother Superior was elected by the 'not it' system.

Hell people these days think it is amazing if you can keep your vow to be loving and faithful to your spouse. You really think they will be able to keep a vow of faithfulness and chastity to their church?

It is an inspiring story and gives so much detail about life in a monastery, reading this book feels like you're visiting.

Back in the day widows and women who were former prostitutes could become nuns, not just young virgins. Not sure if the rules are stricter now. But what would possess someone to forego the possibility of finding romantic love and having children in the modern era is beyond my comprehension. There's no practical sense left in it...perhaps that could also be applied to a number of things "Official Catholicism" does these days.

There are people who are not monks or nuns who have little or no interest in sex of any kind. You sometimes hear of them as 'asexuals'. There are also victims of abuse that view forming any sexual relationship as too painful to deal with.

And there may well be people who do have sexual interests but prefer a quiet, relatively simple life of prayer, study, and work to the way of the secular world and the stresses of raising a family.

It's not a life you or I would choose, but I don't think it's beyond objective comprehension.

Ah, could be. I'm not sure what the requirements are, but still I can't imagine people wanting to spend all their time praying, cooking, cleaning, praying, praying, and praying some more with a bunch of women day in and day out. It isn't fun. Even in Christianity people are gravitating away from the doom and gloom sects over to the fun mega churches with coffee shops and rock bands. At least how I see it. I've never been to any church so I wouldn't know.

Haven't read the thread yet, but I'd like to point out they're missing out on a lot of callings recently because you have to be debt free to join a religious order.

This is causing an interesting recruitment problem with regards to student loans.
