"Here's what you do. You tell him, that you're his friend and that you're going to help him and that everything's going to be alright.

"And then you put a wire on him, and you find out who's selling him, drugs, and then, you get that and you flip him. Turn him into a snitch. You follow that guy, to people really, really bad.

"Been watching The Wire recently. I don't understand a word of it."

My dad worked in load dispatch and once found a guy who attempted to steal live copper wire from a substation. He was a crispy critter and his nice friends left him for dead, he survived. Of course he later sued the power company.

But seriously.... Something has to be done to stop copper theft. I'm not sure of what it is. Maybe that a recycler cannot buy copper from anyone who doesn't have a license to sell it. We don't really need more of that evil big gubment interference with free commerce, but then we also can't have people coming home to find that they air conditioning unit has been stolen ether. This is becoming increasingly common. I own a second home. Luckily, it is in a very low crime rural area. But it is also a rural area that has been hit rather hard by the Great Recession. While there haven't been many reports of copper thefts in this county, there have been a lot in the neighboring one. I may show up one day to find my A/C and plumbing gone. If you live in an area with a lot of foreclosures you have a very high probability of becoming a target.

The theft caused about $25,000 in damage and disrupted phone service for the detachment and community for nearly two days, Baylous said

All for probably 50 bucks worth of scrap. I understand why people steal. You really need some money. Maybe for meth. Maybe for babyfood. Maybe for meth-flavored babyfood. But can you at least steal something worth about what you sell it for? I hate these assholes who do massive damages to steal something of little value. How about I give you 50 bucks NOT to pull all the wiring out of my house?

Not sure of the exact amount they sold it for, but way more than $50.00.
It was a main trunk line they disappeared; about 4 inches in diameter.

Is there a good way to protect outside air conditioners?

KarmaSpork: Was looking at houses yesterday. Found the perfect one... until we discovered both A/C units gone. *sigh*

Why not just make an offer less the air conditioners and get 2 shiny new ones?

I'm guessing that knowledge of the fact that the house is in a neighborhood where AC units go missing is more important that the value of the two AC units.

Won't work if it is a foreclosure and is on the market as an REO property. They are all sold as-is/ Take it or leave it. Buying a foreclosure isn't really a very good proposition for the average buyer. A short sale is better, since the property will probably be in better shape, but the seller still is still going to insist on an as-is contract.

If it isn't a foreclosure, but a straight up sale, the seller's insurance company will replace the unit, but they are going to go with the cheapest POS they can find. In such case, it would be better to ask for an allowance, so that you can get a high quality replacement.

It was a VA as-is short sale. No such thing as "gimmie a new a/c unit" on those deals. That really wasn't the deal breaker ( we can afford the new a/c units). It's just that B of A now requires anyone that is buying a house from one of their short sales to get pre-approved with them - even if you already have another lender and are ready to go. I'm not even sure if that's legal. I simply wont do business with them. But the a/c being just "gaping hole" yanked out was... stunning.

Exactly. We've been trolling the market for a few months to find a solid foreclosure. Seen all kinds of mayhem done to properties. On the upside I did find a really nice one we made an offer on. $106k on 2546 sqft built in 2005. 4/2/1. A/C intact. I liked the stolen a/c house better, but this one was a great deal. I was disappointed until I saw the last house of the day. Then I let my money and my lawyer do the talking for me.
