You know, I'm not scared of criminals. I'd bet we'd do OK if the FBI took off for a week, heck, maybe a month.

I'm scared of the people representing us who are literally selling off our country to private interests.

They're a bigger threat than all the criminals combined. Why doesn't the FBI wiretap all members of Congress 24X7? They'd definitely get a better hit rate...maybe even 1:1

So is that supposed to be what a backdoor to Facebook would look like?

We need to start end-point encrypting everything we do. The technology is there, and if everyone used it, the world would be a better place.

This world be good, and would work - unless, say Skype for instance, was modified to be something other than peer-to-peer.

They compare this to preserving their authority to tap phones. Except phones - old analog phones, I mean - don't store anything. Wiretapping a phone in the old days wouldn't expose communications created before the warrant. It wouldn't include everything you'd said before and a database of all your contacts.

To paraphrase Palpatine, the way to unlimited power is to gain sympathy by pretending to be too weak.

Listen, I know the GOP is big on controlling lives, but let's be honest: everyone is. Obama is, the Dems are, Romney is, everyone. You'd have to be stoned out of your farking mind to think more Democratic leadership is the answer to that problem, but it's hard to be stoned out of your mind when Eric Holder is kicking down the door of every medical marijuana clinic he can find. Furthermore, the thing where the FBI is wanting to tap into these mediums is almost nothing. $20 says the NSA does it already.

I'd be surprised if the government wasn't already in bed with Facebook and I'm really not the tinfoil hat wearing kind of person.

Pictures, connections to other people, facial recognition software they use, and on top of that the fact the the majority of criminals aren't very bright.

It is a treasure chest for investigators.

This. Politics is a sham - it doesn't matter what they call themselves, or what superficial differences are the excuse for the latest bit of political theater, politicians are in the business of selling off every scrap of our rights they can to the highest bidder. The only reason there are even any fights at all is over who gets to divvy up the pie today.

I wouldn't take any bet you'd care to name on the subject of government surveillance - if it carries information that ought to be private, the government either taps it or is trying to tap it (of course, whether they're doing so *competently* is another question).

All the GOP does is talk about smaller/less intrusive government, it's not like it ever actually happens. Besides which, it doesn't sound like it'll end up costing the government anything. They're just going to impose a costly new regulatory burden on certain businesses, and as far as government is concerned it's "free".

Speaking of that, did anyone else like J. Edgar? I don't know why everyone said it was bad. Leo showed a hell of a performance and the lighting of the film really captured the attitude of Hoover.

Well, in real life there's several things about that. One, the NSA *might* at some times share info with the Feebs. However, as the NSA isn't going to appear in court to be questioned, even if the data is legally obtained through a FISA warrant or PDD, they won't just show up with it in court.

Typically it goes more like this - they spot something that for whatever reason they decide to share with the Feds. The info is passed, but with the proviso that it isn't used directly. The Feds instead use the info to amazingly happen to be at the place and time that something unlawful is going to occur. Voila! A bust with no direct involvement. Or they are given the heads up on the names, whereabouts and intents of some likely perpetrator. The Feds then manage to tail the person long enough to pony up some bogus search warrant based on "a tip" and again, you have a non-direct bust.

I have occasionally seen NSA do "direct action" field work with the Feds but it was a PDD thing, way back years ago and very specific in scope.

In practice you generally get weird horsecrap like catching some congresscritter passing secure data and the NSA will waffle the info up and down the command chain two or three loops before deciding they can't pass it on.

I certain that they will never use any information discovered outside the narrow and proper warrant they will obtain.

The FBI wants to backdoor Facebook, Skype, and Instant Messaging

and the result is that American Citizens will be the ones getting it in the back door in the long run.
