This anecdote is awesome: In the winter before the 2011 season, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein contacted Rivera's agent, Fern Cusa, to make a substantial three-year offer that far exceeded what the Yankees at the time were offering. Mariano thought it out, then told Cusa he insisted on talking to Epstein personally. |

Sure he will. |

| Adolf Oliver Nipples ...and his career didn't die of old age, either. He was poisoned, stabbed, shot, hung, stretched, disemboweled, drawn and quartered. I despise the Yankees, but all the same I never want to see a guy end his career like that. I hope he comes back and ends his career like a Yankee should end his career, being shelled off the mound with a 7.65 ERA and 15 blown saves. |

| ChrisDe How is it that he's on video getting hurt? It was batting practice, for cripes sakes. Can we go anywhere without being on camera? |

[www.lolroflmao.com image 500x328] And then you woke up from your dream, amirite?! Oh man, what a perfect way to end the weekend. Thank you! It is a dream, which is why I said should. I also think the Yankees should go 62-100 every year. Then again, what else would you expect from a Pirates fan? Futility is my milieu, and I think that teams that essentially buy championships should share in the suffering on occasion. |

| NewportBarGuy Bah! heh... I actually have incredible respect for Mo and wish him a speedy recovery. He's an amazing closer and makes watching the Sox-Yanks series just that much more enjoyable. Hope he can retire from the mound, I just hope he does it after a blown save to the Red Sox. Get better, Mo. You're one of a kind! |

Mariano thought it out, then told Cusa he insisted on talking to Epstein personally. So he called Epstein. "I really appreciate what you've offered, I am honored," he said. "But before we go any further, I cannot deceive you. I cannot do it. I do not think it would be right. I respect the Red Sox, I love Boston, but it would not be right to pitch in a Red Sox uniform at this point in my career. Money isn't worth doing the wrong thing." Epstein in turn thanked him. He'd reached out to the right person. So ... Mo is the anti-Damon? |

Alphabet Knee injuries will have the final say. |

I don't really follow baseball, but is there a reason a torn ACL is considered a potential career-ender? I can think of a bunch of NFL running backs that have had the same injury, but I can't think any that had to retire because of it. Not all of them could play like the could before the injury, granted, but I wouldn't think that would be as much of an issue for a pitcher. |

What I figured. This simply wasn't an acceptable ending. I think if he hurt himself on the mound, he would have been OK with it. This wasn't acceptable. Neondistraction: I don't really follow baseball, but is there a reason a torn ACL is considered a potential career-ender? Well, his age for one. Pitchers rely heavily on their knees, especially for certain pitches. If he's forced to change his mechanics, he'll never be the same. |

I would really hate to see him go thru a rehab and suck and then suffer the indignity of a release. Let it go Mo. |

Johnny boy once proclaimed, while wearing a Red Sox uniform, that he would never, ever play for the Yankees. Enough money was thrown at him, and guess what? He played for the Yankees. Mo is the opposite of that. /Red Sox fan. |

Rivera could probably sit in a chair on the mound and still baffle hitters with that filthy pitch of his. |

zarberg: So ... Mo is the anti-Damon? I have no idea why Red Sox fans still think Johnny Damon betrayed them. He came into Boston a mercenary, and that's exactly how he left. Jesus Christ, it's like hating a stripper who no longer thinks you're cute after the dance is over and she has your $40. |

You don't get it. A reporter asked him if he would ever play for the Yankees and he said NO!!! He totally should have said yes. Because there would have been absolutely no ramifications from that. None whatsoever. The Boston media totally would have let that go and the fans wouldn't have cared at all. Plus, the stuff about Damon being a mercenary is false. Every single member of the '04 and '07 Red Sox teams was drafted by the Sox and developed in the Boston system. Their salaries were paid with the money that ownership got from collecting empty bottles for deposit. Unlike those farking Yankees who have never developed anyone (especially not a certain HOF closer). |

Rivera was expected to retire at the end of this season, as he is old in baseball years (42) and his contract expires at the end of the season. Since he is out for the rest of the season, the question is "Will he be able to come back next year?" Will the Yankees want to pay a 43 year old man coming off a major knee injury millions of dollars to be their closer? |
