I was disappointed, I was expecting to read on the seedy underbelly of the competition, where teams have a member who seduces members of other teams, to harm team cohesiveness or to at least distract from keeping up with everyone...

ACF? NAQT? Subby, you're making me relive my college years.

I mean I wasn't that good at it. I got random things like geography mostly. But I did it mostly because of the fact I liked hanging out with the people. But man oh man you could tell that this sort of thing consumed some guy's entire lives, for example:

Pageantry means little to today's elite quiz bowlers, who are focused on little else besides winning. I watched one player repeatedly sigh, slam his hand down, and shout "Yes!" every time an opponent answered a question correctly, as if to say, "I knew that, too." At one point, University of Minnesota wiz Andrew Hart casually told me he was the 22nd-ranked quiz bowler of all time. When I asked Ohio State's Jacob Durst why he plays the game, he smiled and said, "Humanities 3 doesn't cut it anymore."

I know those teams and I've played them before. Both of them are Super-competitive. And usually we got our ass handed to these guys (plus Illinois and UChicago) numerous, numerous times. But I still had a good time.

Wonders if there are any other former quiz bowl players on Fark?

Ironically our team had the a more balanced male/female ratio and we always joked that the females should tease the other team so we could distract them.

In high school, the weekly matches were televised on the local PBS station. We won a bunch, lost a few, but we always had the worst possible outfits for television. Narrow stripes, paisley (which is bad for everything), neon pink, and check patterned shirts were always prepared a couple days in advance.

"Applejack. Applejack, Chissum City Social Club 1-3-7-FEB-2-9"

We had one female on our team. An attractive busty blonde, I shiat you not, and a damned intelligent girl (she's about to get her PhD in Art History). She had a habit of wearing low-cut shirts and short skirts during tournaments :D

In my first game of Quizbowl ever, my team (the "C" squad) beat Illinois A, which largely consisted of M*** S*****. I remember thinking "not so tough." The next time around, M.S. single-handedly beat our team by 200 points.

Our team's best finish in the local tourney was when we lost to the eventual winners, a team that consisted of a neckbearded savant who looked like he was pushing 50 and a couple of warm bodies so that he had enough people for a "team". (I'm not sure they answered a single question all game.)

I blame that Quiz Bowl gang for ruining that show. Not exactly sure how they did it - maybe persistence, practice using their little homebrew simulators, maybe some cooperative method of gaming the selection system, I dunno - but at some point a LOT of quiz bowl people got on the show. They all knew each other.

Every. Single. One. of these guys was the exact opposite of charismatic, like your neckbeard guy. Ratings fell. ABC responded by selecting photogenic younger people as contestants, but they were kind of dumb, and there was no longer any point to the show.

We had one here in Houston called "the Texaco Star Academic Challenge." I was on the team-we had to win the first two rounds to get on TV. I did well, but I chewed the hell out of some gum while on the stage due to nerves. That was the only thing anyone noticed. Too bad it's not recorded somewhere.

I don't think our college had a quiz team, but I did the high school thing, including the live-on-TV version. I was on the last one my local station ever aired; they canceled it the following year. (We lost the finals, alas).

Our team was mainly male; for that final match, we seriously considered wearing suits and boxers (as the lower half was invisible behind the seating).

High school. 2007-2009. SE Michigan. Only 2 white kids on the team out of 30. Rest were all Indians.

Oh man, both of those guys... Farking C.D. is such a strident advocate for good quiz bowl at the high school level, and so absolutely terrible at having a human conversation.

Man, my high school's current team has that problem with Hunter College High School. These farking kids have been demolishing all local opposition including us for a few years now, and the core of the team is FINALLY graduating this year. One tournament last year, we were unbeaten until the finals, when we went up against them. 765-0.

Wow. You must have a different scoring system. Ours maxes out at 675 points (10 + 5 power + 30 bonus * 15 questions).

Twenty tossups, of which they got 13 for power and 7 for not-power. My students said that by halftime they were just too stunned to buzz.
