DamnYankees: Just saw the Avengers - can't believe there's no thread today on point, so I guess this comes closest.

It was good. IMO, it's the third best of this series of movies, behind the first Iron Man and Captain America. Some very good moments in the film, some very nice laughs, and the Hulk absolutely steals the show. But it's not really 'great' - I can't really see myself seeing it again. It was just...pleasant.

Solid 8/10.

The juice runs down your chin and drips onto your chest, and the place in between your fingers gets so sticky you have trouble separating them. Hulk was far and away the best part of the movie, though he somehow goes through a huge change with zero explanation. That kind of bothered me. And even though the Banner's explanation for how he manages to control himself is a very clever and well written line, it doesn't actually make any sense.

I must say I was actually very annoyed I didnt get to see a trailer for The Dark Knight Rises in front of it. I thought the whole point of releasing that new trailer this week was to put it in front of the Avengers. Goddammitall.

It does if you read the comics. Banner-- the man, not the monster-- is a sociopath with severe daddy issues and lots of emotional baggage. When he and the Hulk were finally separated, he went crazy; Full-on mad scientist. The Hulk was eventually hired to kill Banner (and succeeded).

Dr. Doom was the one who separated them (at Hulk's request), and when Hulk went back to Doom complaining that he didn't know it would end like this after the separation, blaming Doom for making Banner into a monster and forcing Hulk to kill him, Doom said that Banner was always the monster, and that the only thing that kept him under control was The Hulk being his outlet and scapegoat.

But even if you omit the comics and just go by the last movie (The Incredible Hulk), you see in the very last scene that Banner has learned to control the change... And he kinda likes it.

Banner's the rage-beast. Hulk is a side-effect.

I recall how Tina Fey wrote in her book, Bossypants, that this happens even to the actually good actresses. She noted how some TV shows will wind up in danger of cancellation, or not being picked up, solely because some executive- inevitably male- will look at the cast and say, literally, "I don't want to fark any of these people." Boom. Cancelled.

Then explain Desperate Housewives. Or Sex in the City. Or The View.

It was acceptable. The 3D enhanced the experience for some scenes (notably the final battle), but if you're pinching pennies you can skip the 3D surcharge without really missing too much. I'm not sorry I paid extra for the 3D.

Could work. Get other non powered spies and mercs in it like Paladin, Silver Sable, etc.

Here's the only thing I didn't like about The Avengers: They didn't change the scene where Black Widow knocks out a guy by whipping her hair in his face.

I'd have thought they would have heard the Internet complaining about it, and found a better angle or fixed it somehow... But they didn't. It's still there. Black Widow whips her hair back, and the guy goes down. Her head is nowhere near his face, and it's glaringly obvious.

That is good to know. In that case maybe I'll see it again in 3d. I avoid post conversions until I hear from someone who saw it if ti is another Clash of the Titans.

That was probably the least violent thing that happened to Banner in the entire movie.

And he had picked up Loki's staff moments before the explosion so that might have had something to do with it.

If it's the version of Black Widow that Joss Whedon wrote for The Avengers, I'd be okay with a Black Widow movie. However, if it's the version of Black Widow that was in Iron Man 2, where the writers thought sticking Scarlett Johansson in tight black leather was a suitable replacement for giving her character a personality, please no.

I'm convinced that apart from Joss Whedon, Hollywood has no clue how to develop female characters in action movies.

that scene was amazing huge huge cheers in the theater. The fact that this movie wasn't a muddled mess was amazing. Think about it every character had screen time and felt like a real part of the movie.

I wouldn't necessarily want a Black Widow movie I'd like a Nick Fury movie with the SHIELD team in it.

I thought she might be overshadowed with all of the male heroes in the movie, but I think she turned out to be the lynchpin of the entire team. Good work from Whedon in pulling that off.

True. Before the film was released there were comments about all these superheros and her with her two little handguns looking totally out of place. In the film she played Loki like a violin and found out his plan, and then managed to shut down the portal. She held her own and it was earned, not contrived.

With all the money this movie made, she can finally afford an acting class.

I'm inclined to agree. I don't think Hulk is a character that lends itself well to carrying an entire movie. Maybe somebody will come along and write a Hulk script that proves me wrong, but I think part of the reason the other Hulk movies sucked is because no matter how well he works in comics, live action film is a completely different ball of wax.
