| Bathia_Mapes As I said earlier in the thread about the 5 year old boy who was also called clinically obese, you cannot use BMI on growing children. It doesn't take into account such things as bone mass and growth spurts, etc. Having said that, this child isn't clinically obese. Not only that, these children that are being labeled as such when they're not are more likely to develop eating disorders. |

| ArkAngel Chloe's BMI score was 98, which is eight points above the healthy mark, according to health service guidelines. Do the Brits use a different kind of BMI chart? The highest I've ever seen was 79 and that was for someone 330 lbs and just over 4 feet tall |

ArkAngel: Chloe's BMI score was 98, which is eight points above the healthy mark, according to health service guidelines. Do the Brits use a different kind of BMI chart? The highest I've ever seen was 79 and that was for someone 330 lbs and just over 4 feet tall We figured out what they meant by that. Chloe's BMI score was in the 98th percentile for children her age. |

My 13 year old son is 5'-5" and 145 lbs, which puts his body mass in the 98th percentile for his age, yet he is far from overweight. BMI is a pretty ridiculous measurement for people not at the apex of the bell curve. |

I was often heavier then other kids my age, but not fat as a kid. Just not stick armed and legged like many other kids. Always been strong and active, even now my "healthy weight" is considered to be higher then most women my height because i have more muscle mass. That said, i do have too much fat now too, that I'm getting closer to middle age. |

The little girl is a bit on the chubby side but kids tend to gain weight before they grow so don't see what the big deal is. |

the Dunlap Measurement is a much more accurate method...has your belly dun lapped over your belt? you're fat. BMI is iffy at best. |

The Great Gazoo: My 13 year old son is 5'-5" and 145 lbs, which puts his body mass in the 98th percentile for his age, yet he is far from overweight. BMI is a pretty ridiculous measurement for people not at the apex of the bell curve. That someone got paid to come up with the BMI and some other jackass got paid to make it the official measurement for healthcare is farking absurd. If BMI can only be applied as an indicator for sedentary people that are obviously obese in the first place, what farking good is it? How many fit but stocky athletes does it classify as obese? How does BMI act as any sort of indicator for genetic predisposition or current ailments? Shiatty people are getting paid money to apply this shiat science to the public, and when people ar fed such obviously asinine bullshiat, all it does is turn them off from actually learning about controlling and monitoring their health. /Dumb science makes me stabby //Chick is pretty hot |

This is stupid. Back in my Army days, we used to do BMI and if you were over, they would pull out the skin fold calipers and take a measurement that way. Some of us were way over on BMI due to the insane amount of training we were doing. Do the British not know of this, or even how to apply common farking sense when they see a result that cannot possibly be right? |

Yes, she's clearly overweight in that picture. Her Dad looks overweight, but not horribly so. If her mom is significantly overweight, then the Nurses are right to try to get on top of the issue before it becomes a problem. But if her mom is just some overweight or less, there's no issue. |

| Techhell Is there a worse way to analyze weight than the BMI? According to most BMI calculators, I've been overweight to moderately obese since I was 15... back when I was playing hockey 6 days a week in the fall, winter and early spring, soccer 6 days a week in the spring and summer and football 5 days a week in the late summer, fall and early winter. And getting my rear kicked because I was a damned beanpole. Hell, I ended up growing a ratty looking goatee for my senior year of high school just so that I had someone obviously masculine about my body since I just couldn't pack on the weight or the muscles to do it in other ways. And yet according to the BMI I would have been considered at the top end of Normal and the low end of Overweight during all those years when I refused to wear tight fitting shirts because I was embarrassed that people could count my ribs. 20 years later I most certainly am overweight. Too much beer, too many years doing tech support and other cubicle jobs, too little exercise, and yeah, Techhell is fat. Dropping 20lbs would be a very good thing for me to do. 25-30lbs might be better. But to get to a "normal" range, I need to drop between 40 and 60 lbs! (40lbs if I have a "heavy" build, 60lbs if I have a "slight" build and 50lbs for a "medium" build.) It's bafflingly insane and I can't quite figure out how any medical professional can use this with a straight face. |

You know, the next time I hear a Brit talking about how silly the U.S. is for still using the imperial system of measurement, I'm going to ask them to explain to me how exactly a 'stone' makes any more sense than a 'pound' as a measurement of weight. |
