Wow... do these women think that women of all classes and throughout history have had the luxury of doing nothing throughout pregnancy? I bet what the woman in the article is doing is lightweight compared to the work of our ancestors, at least those not in the highest social classes. Good for her.

My wife worked until she was about 8 months pregnant. And she spent her days working with severely disabled and autistic children. Lifting them dozens of times a day, by herself. It wasn't until she got to the point where she couldn't safely lift them anymore that she stopped working. Pampered women who get to stay home and do nothing for a year are the exception, not the rule. Staying active, healthy and in generally good shape does wonders for pregnant moms and babies alike.

I could only guess that these other women were concerned that her jogging would have the same result as shaken baby syndrome.

Ideally, long-term, low impact exercise would be best.

I do not think our pregnant ancestors went jogging down their concrete sidewalks for miles at a time. More like walking long distances, performing relatively low-impact laborious tasks, and so on.

Heavy exercise diverts necessary nutrients from the baby to the mother. It's about the same as anorexia, as far as the baby is concerned.

It leads to underweight and mentally stunted infants. It's not quite as bad as fetal alcohol syndrome, but it's definitely starting the kid out at a severe disadvantage compared to his peers.

As opposed to all the rest of the times during the day, when tripping and falling are not a concern, right?

Gotcha beat. Mine worked until the week before she delivered. She managed a barn on a horse ranch. 5:30 AM - 6:30 PM every day, slinging hay bales, mucking stalls, and all other manner of good stuff.

Which is why it's important to eat healthy, so there are enough nutrients to supply both mom and child, vice eating ice cream and french fries.

That's why she was just jogging, not on a P90X routine. At her doctor's suggestion no less.
Still no reason for other ignorant coonts to be in her business calling her names.

The body feeds the fetus first. Pregnant women in death camps brought healty babies to term. Excercise, even very vigorous aerobics are not going to harm the fetus in themselves.

I don't expect that overdoing exercise is good for the fetus any more than excessive smoking, drinking, or riding your bicycle to the polls to demand Suffrage for Women is, but what does the Daily Fail really want? Confinement for ladies in a family way?

The Victorian superstituiton that ladies were delicate flowers and particularly vulnerable when bare-foot and pregnat was trashed decades ago. A little exercise won't do the fetus any harm but will provide the Mother-to-be with an easier gestation and an easier and quicker recovery.

In any case, the "Selfish Mother" is a bogey of the far right clan that regards Mere Woman as a disposable baby-making machine whose rights, safety, health, and body are to be sacrificed for the production of cannon fodder and other useful males.

Back in the Fifties and Sixties, women smoked, drank, and voted with gay abandon. The outcome seems to have been far from genocidal, and I expect that although the burdens laid upon expectant mothers by the press and the political howler monkeys and gibbering idiots are heavy, that they needed run to depriving the Baby Makers from the odd glass of wine or beer, the odd stolen puff, or a little light jogging and housework, not to meniton a bit of yoga.

If you don't like the way that women are bearing children, bear them yourselves, you Farkers!

Although if you think about it, those babies grew up to be modern-day politicians. So maybe all that drinking and smoking really did damage their children's mental development.

Was there some sort of press release on the news wire that read " Bomb goes off in Kabul: Dozens dead...........German Austerity Plan for EU in Doubt after Hollande Victory.........Snotty biatch Calls Pregnant Woman A Selfish Cow in UK......"?

Or, maybe they just make this shiat up to rile people and are pulling it out of their collective arse!

Jogging is not heavy exercise.

It's interesting, though, how strongly nutrients are diverted away from the mother. Like, even if the mother is taking large doses of calcium supplements, her body will still grab calcium from her bones in order for the fetus's growth, because that is just how the body's evolved to work.

Being insufficiently nourished and having to constantly work is the assumed state of things, and our bodies work best in that state.

Not to mention you can trip just walking down the street. Should she also avoid stairs, lest she take a tumble? Or crossing a street, just in case a car doesn't see her and she is hit?

FTFA - At seven months pregnant, I was exercising in a gym one morning while away from home with my job - I'm a manager for the Highways Agency - when an instructor advised me that 'some of our members aren't comfortable watching you lift weights while pregnant'.

Yet again, my critics were respectable individuals just like me, which made their comments all the more hurtful.

I gave him short shrift. After all, had I been picking up and carrying a toddler while pregnant - the average weight of a two-year-old is 2st - nobody would have questioned it.

She has an excellent point here. I wonder how many of those gym members would've offered to help her with the toddler and/or taken her to task for lifting the child had they'd seen her then.

Pregnancy, in its later stages, loosens the ligaments around joints, like your hips and knees. It can be dangerous to engage in certain physical activity.

That being said, the women criticizing her needs to have some pickles and ice cream with a side of STFU. They don't know what her doctor said or what she feels capable of doing.

The above is the only even semi-legitimate complaint I could remotely come up with.

I have a friend who is a personal trainer and has brought three big healthy babies into this world while teaching spin and a few other classes several times a day until just days before she gave birth. She's a machine and her babies were all the very picture of health. She's a healthy woman eating healthy and staying healthy herself... Sounds like the best way to have a healthy baby as possible.

I'd not sure I'd be happy if my wife was jogging though from a bio-mechanical POV, just because of the constant shock from heels hitting pavement, but there's nothing wrong with heavy exercise per se. For a woman to stay fit while carrying a baby I'd think spin class would probably be perfect. All the aerobic exercise without any of the jarring shocks to the fetus from other kinds of exercise.

Is anyone else more surprised by the fact that the criticism was vocal, direct, and repeated by multiple individuals? I don't think - in my almost 40 years on the planet - I've ever had a complete stranger, unsolicited and unprovoked, say something snarky or judgmental about me to my face. Is this a British thing? Or a female thing? I just can't get beyond the audacity inherent in the idea of shouting at a random person who has nothing to do with me or mine...
