As much as I'd like to castigate Jenny McCarthy and hippie parents for their illogical vaccination phobia, that's not the problem here. FTA: "Patti emphasized that pertussis isn't spreading because of an anti-vaccine movement. Among possible reasons for the recent spike are that diagnoses in teens and adults are getting better and doctors are doing a better job with reporting, she added Health officials say the disease tends to return in three-to-five-year cycles." |

Wisconsin with nearly 2,000 cases this year, though that state has not declared an epidemic ![]() 2,000 is a very small number. It starts with a 2! 2 is the second smallest number after 1. |

| The Decider
Just saw my doctor (in Wa) yesterday, got the vaccine and he thinks it IS because parents are opting out. He says that in Washington State, we've dipped below the 90% vaccination rate and that's when things start to spread. |

Anti-vaccers are idiots. That is all. |

Its ok, jeebus protects me. |

But at least these kids don't have to worry about autism. So there's that... |

Came here to say this. There's enough to blame Jenny McCarthy for already. Blaming her for things that are not her fault just harms your credibility, and no one will believe you when you blame her for things that are her fault. |

Seriously, peoples, go out and get a TDAP shot. It's for the herd. I got one three weeks ago. /Trying to imagine the hilarity of simultaneous Tetanus Pertussis. Coughing your lungs out through clenched jaws. |

Hippie parents? I always assumed that Jenny's followers were religious conservatives. I guess that assumption was based on their very consistent hatred of science. Now you have me wondering... |

Well of course they are going to say that. They don't need a bunch of morons marching on them saying that they are hurting their rights to ruin their children's lives. This sounds more like a reach to find something that isn't the anti-vaccine movement more than anything. |

I'd crane my neck to see Jenny's chestations jiggle during a coughing fit! WHOOOOP-HACK! 'scuse me. |

Our 7 month old and us were vaccinated just over a month ago up here in Vancouver, BC. Even if you're a hippy, I can't imagine any parent wanting to watch their baby cough and cough and cough. Ours actually just went through his first (mild) cough and cold, and it was heartbreaking. |

I think we can all agree that she's still a harmful dumb-ass, despite not being responsible in this case. |

Anti-vaccers are just another group of people that base their beliefs on what "feels right" rather than allow silly things like facts, history, or science get in the way. God Bless our public educational system. |

| God-is-a-Taco Digital Communist: Hippie parents? I always assumed that Jenny's followers were religious conservatives. I guess that assumption was based on their very consistent hatred of science. Now you have me wondering... Hatred of science is bipartisan when it comes to idiots. It's a subgenre of hippie, but a lot of these anti-vac failures of humanity could fit under the moniker. Hatred of science is bipartisan when it comes to idiots. |

I have an injection I'd like to give Jenny McCarthy ... |

Step one: release new strain of whooping cough, that even people who were previously vaccinated arent immune to. Step 2: cry alarmist and blame it on all those 'anti-vaccine whack jobs'; pass new vaccination laws, further eroding peoples liberties. Step 3: profit, with money for the pharm companies and power for the state. |

Wait until Croup. That one was horrible. My daughter was about 18mo when she had it, wound up taking her to the hospital. The problem with the anti-vaccers is that they create a public health problem. The vaccine is not 100% effective, thus any unvaccinated kids run a risk of giving pertussis to vaccinated kids. |

vaccines would be fine if they didn't put so much farked up shiat in them; get rid of the farked up shiat and people won't have a problem getting vaccines. thankfully, people can recover from some of these diseases that are generally vaccinated against, which is a better option then developing a disorder like autism. |
||
| basemetal Let Darwin sort them out. |
||
| someonelse Can't blame Jenny for pertussis outbreaks. Those vaccinations wear off. I didn't realize there was a booster shot available, though. I had pertussis once in the 1990s. What fun it was coughing up all my internal organs. |
||
| factoryconnection I feel like Tdap needs more press, if ignorance of it is partially to blame for these outbreaks. I need to check my immunization record when I get home. |
||
| Current Resident Sure she's an anti-vac idiot. But given the opportunity...Angry fist of God, etc, etc... |

Now you have me wondering... Meh....I've always seen the anti-vaccine crowd as a bag of mixed nuts. While looking for a job in TV production, I spotted one with an obscure cable network for parents of autistic kids. A bit of digging showed that they were anti-vaxers. More than anything, they seemed to fit the generic "psychotic parent" mold. You know, the type that SCREAMS at the teacher for giving their kid a bad grade, the type that gives their kid a metric shiatton of vitamin supplements (90% of ads on their site were for snake oil that claimed to reduce Autism symptoms by just enough that they could never be fully proven wrong), or think everyone who smiles at their kid is going to molest them. /Only job I've ever skipped applying for on ethical grounds |

FTA: Among possible reasons for the recent spike are that diagnoses in teens and adults are getting better and doctors are doing a better job with reporting, she added So in other words, they are guessing why the spike is occurring and really don't know the actual reason! It could very well be the anti-vac folks! |

Unless they get hit by a bus. There is no vaccine against a bus. NO NO NO Silly. You work up a resistance to bus impacts by starting small- like some posions. First a Smart Car....then maybe a Chevy Malubu. A few years later Crown Vic and then BLAMMO- total resistance achieved. |

Only in America would a nude model/actress have her scientific views taken seriously. |

Came for Jenny McCarthy. Was hoping to do so again today, but you tricked me, Subby. Leaving unsatisfied. |

Recent studies have been finding that whooping cough cases are more common in people WHO HAVE BEEN VACCINATED for whooping cough...not those who have not received the vaccination But, hey, its easier to blame Jenny McCarthy |

As much as I like to point out the stupid that is anti-vaxxing, most of this has to do with the fact that the pertussis vaccine needs to be reupped, and a lot of us don't have insurance right now. That and a lot of people confuse our current tdap with the old pertussis vaccine. |

AcneVulgaris: JackieRabbit: But at least these kids don't have to worry about autism. So there's that... They do have hereditary stupidity to deal with, however. I'm not sure that all anti-vacers are morbidly stupid. Rather, some are just gullible and easily frightened. It's easy to get parents to make sure that their kids get the DTP series without a law requiring to do so. We just need to pass laws requiring that any child admitted to a hospital, clinic or treated in any medical facility be vaccinated. This is what most states do with certain vaccinations for cats and dogs. You aren't required to vaccinate your pets in my state, but if they need veterinary care, the vet must vaccinate the animal upon admission. |

It is the antivax movement, sorry. If adults and teens are developing it later in life, well, they always have been, but adults can recover from pertussis. Babies can't, that's why we vaccinate them. So that when adults come down with it later, they don't infect babies and KILL them. There are more than a few diseases that show up twice in their life cycle (chickenpox is probably the best known one--it comes back later as shingles), but that's hardly an excuse not to vaccinate your kids against them OR to brush off a sudden uptick in deaths as merely better reporting and diagnosis. Nobody should be dying of whooping cough in 2012. |

Here in Vermont, we give the anti vaxors a few options fro not get them. Moral, Religious, and Philisophical. I asked Bernie Sanders, Shouldn't they need a degree in Philosophy for that one? He did get a chuckle. |
