Popov was 50-60 meters behind his younger companion when he saw a long crack ahead of him. He approached cautiously and started probing it with his pole to see if it was a crevasse and how strong the snow bridge was.

So the "young companion" (nudge, nudge) had already crossed the crevasse when dude started probing it with his pole? If you want to be safe out in crevasse country you go in a team of 3 or 4 and rope yourselves together.

I hope they send him a bill for the rescue costs. I'm really sick as a taxpayer having to pay to rescue all these people who insist on skiing in the back-country and then get into trouble. The regular ski hills have marked runs for a reason!

There's aaaaalways one.

Waaaaah! My tax dollars! Waaaah! Personal responsibility! Waaaah! I'm a dick! Waaaah! Waaaah! Waaaah! Taxes! Waaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

1) This happened in Canada, a civilized country, so your taxes didn't pay dick.

2) Even in Canada, a civilized country, the majority of S&R comes from volunteers. And if the Army gets called in they love it. When they use their choppers it's great training for their troops. This is an excellent use of our tax dollars.

3) The actual amount of your personal taxes that fund the actual costs incurred in these rescues doesn't amount to diddley dick. That Latte' you are sipping probably costs more.

4) Those of us who DO like to hike and climb pay for numerous permits and trail passes every year that help greatly in covering these costs and maintaining our forests and parks, since people don't want their TAXES to go to such nonsense.

In other words: Shut up.

Well put. Folks who say things like waste of tax dollars etc..don't quite realize the extent of volunteer search and rescue. Here in BC, especially in the rural areas, any high angle rescue say for example; a car accident, is also responded to by volunteers.
The actual money spent rescuing wayward skiers is an absolute pittance compared to the cost of the 125 drunk driving fatalities in BC every year. We have a government monopoly on insurance I have no choice but to pay for that shiat.
