Forty-nine headless and handless bodies found along Mexican highway. Seriously did they have a flatbed to dump all those bodies? How did nobody see this happen?

Nobody saw anything? Maybe they didn't want to add to the body count.

That's what I was thinking. I mean what the hell would anyone do after seeing cartel members unload 49 mutilated torsos? I sure as hell wouldn't stick around long enough for them to know I saw it.

"A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you're talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who's gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all farkin' night."

Actually, it wasn't the cartels this time.

Rick, of Slaughterhouse fame, was just in the neighborhood.

TFA: Drug violence has killed more than 47,500 people since Calderon launched a stepped-up offensive when he took office in December 2006.

So, drugs do kill after all.

I'm beginning to think that these are the same stack of bodies from last time.

They probably just take them out from the morgue and dump them back on the streets.

I wonder if there's anything America could do about this. Like, say, legalizing something that is often smuggled in from Mexico, that might take away a good deal of the cartels' money, and therefore power.

Nuke it from space. It can be the Irradiated Wasteland of Mexico - with slight fallout in the border states, but no great loss there. Just a lot of nothing between the US and Guatemala.

Yeah, because organized crime in the United States completely disappeared after the 21st Amendment (getting rid of Prohibition) was enacted!

Nobody saw anything, and you'll be hard pressed to get the ones who did see something to say different.

Closed_Minded_Bastage: So, drugs do kill after all.

It's not the drugs. Even if every drug was legalized, Narco Warlords like the Zetas would find something to rackqueteer on to keep their profits flowing - human trafficing most likely.

These are not nice people who will suddenly go straight and legitimate if the US deregulates and legalizes every known Schedule I drug and analogue. These are cutthroat murderers who are raised to be this way from an early age, and professional soldiers who have turned traitor to their countries for the promise of fast and easy money. (including a significant number of American servicemen, by the way.)

Why you dumb assholes hiding in your foxholes while getting the rest of the world pissed off at your paranoia of brown people in Dirkaganistan don't wake the hell up and realize the actual threat is occuring right now, right on our borders, beats the hell out of me.

These gangs are the base definition of terrorists. But because they don't pray to allah when they blow things up, we don't care.

Even aside from the fact that much of the organized crime in the US is also involved in the drug trade...how much power do they have now?

Organized crime, in some form or another, will always exist. Legalizing pot (and maybe certain other drugs) would take a good chunk out of their power.

Actually, organized crime was badly hurt by the end or Prohibition. In order to survive they moved into other markets. Like drugs.

Will legalizing drugs, and ending the US government's pressure on other nations to crush the drug suppliers, magically make this all go away? Don't be an idiot. It will, however, hurt the drug cartels. As long as drugs are illegal there will always be a violent black market to provide them to the people who want them. That's just reality. We've tried this whole "war on drugs" tactic and it's not working. Maybe we should try something else.

We should negotiate a cease fire. Then we'll lull Drugs into a false sense of security and then BAM!, surprise it with a radioactive Trojan Horse or something.

I sorta wonder about this level of violence...

I mean pretend you're enterprising criminal organization that occasionally engages in murder as part of your continued business model.

What does all of this murder actually accomplish for you? I mean I know they must have some kind of twisted criminal logic behind it.

I'm sorry, I forgot to add the sarc tag. No shiat Sherlock.

Legalizing soft drugs would go a long way towards alleviating the massive influx of cash they get by supplying the American demand for said soft drugs and allow law enforcement to concentrate on more important stuff, like say ... human trafficking.

Intimidation. People are less likely to actively snoop, or report things they accidentally stumble across, or cooperate with official investigations if they're terrified of retaliation.

What a lovely country. I'm planning my next vacation there.

I have a friend who married a Mexican immigrant. For some reason, the husband is having trouble getting his Green Card (no, I didn't ask why). My friend decided to leave her job as a dental hygienist and move to Oaxaca for six months while Immigration sorts through the husband's paperwork. Hope it was worth it.

The black market for booze completely disappeared. And that took a lot of money out of the hands of mobsters and put it back into the hands of law-abiding companies. Companies that pay taxes and don't routinely gun down their competition on the street corner.

Organized crime existed before prohibition, it's just that prohibition gave them an opportunity to expand and gain a much larger foothold in the U.S. When prohibition ended they took away a major source of their income. Sure, they switched to other illegal things like gambling
