| FlyingLizardOfDoom So 48 graves are being covered up? |
||
| Nadie_AZ I am 2/5ths sure this isn't going to happen. |

Could cadaver dogs help locate graves or has too much time passed? |
||
| Gwendolyn She still stays in a log cabin built from chestnut trees that his ancestors chopped by hand. Yes the white people did all the manual labor themselves. They also fetched the slaves lemonade and cookies. |
||
| Barfmaker Krymson Tyde: Could cadaver dogs help locate graves or has too much time passed? Good questions, seems the answer is no. FTA: Any human remains except for tooth enamel would have decayed long ago, said Greg Gaston, the University of North Alabama geography professor who surveyed the site. Sounds like they've left their caries behind. |

| GoSurfing All Wal Marts should have cemetery plots out back for the kindly old greeters that work there (or any Wal Mart aficionado), with nice plasticized Chinese tombstones in Wal Mart blue. It'd be their way of giving back, and I'm sure the workers would love to be buried in the back of the store, or, even better, bury them under the parking lot- with the tombstone being the concrete parking stop...with a nice stenciled spray painting honoring the person that lies underneath the asphalt. They should have marriages, memorial services, and baptisms held in a Wal Mart. Such a fine upclass place, it's a hub of modern American civilization. |

really hard to give a fark about dead people in the ground across the street from a walmart. |

Contrived outrage-du-jour is contrived. |

| AbbeySomeone
WalMart, is there anywhere they won't take over? |
||
| digitalpirate
Now the people under Walmart can be more like the people inside Walmart. Dead |
||

Cemetery aside, changing the zoning to put up a WalMart next to a cattle farm seems like a bad idea. |
||
| SwiftFox
By all accounts, the cemetery was an acre, and a deed from 1903 says it was an exact square, with General Coffee's grave in the center. Hello, FTA the cemetery seems to be the slave owner's. |

Slaves under and slave labor inside. |

| hammettman Better off dead than alive in the Walmart |

Don't Native Americans get protections so that if a burial ground is discovered, all construction must stop? Other Americans don't get that protection? |

GoldSpider: Contrived outrage-du-jour is contrived. Special circumstances: slave cemeteries have always been treated like crap, just like the people who are buried within them were treated like crap. It's a final indignity to say that, 'eh, you and your culture and burial traditions are worthless and not worth preserving for future generations'. You know? It's a disregard for the past. If it's that unimportant to steamroll over a gravesite, why not steamroll over all gravesites equally. |
||
| Surool
Maybe they could move the graves. That usually works out okay. |
||
| GoSurfing ExperianScaresCthulhu: If it's that unimportant to steamroll over a gravesite, why not steamroll over all gravesites equally. I believe the day will come that you can no longer even be buried in the ground, and all existing cemeteries will be used for their real estate value. I mean, don't you kind of have to be a self important person to want a permanent little spot on this earth? Lots of crazy ethical questions are going to come up in the future. |

Why doesn't WalMart just push their own employees in a ditch and build over them. Kinda the same as building over the slaves right? |

I'm all for steamrolling over dead people. this isn't even doing that. they are building it next door. now, go look for your sand to stuff in your vagina someplace else. - How were they buried? - Did any West African burial traditions survive? - Was there a change in how people were buried? - Was burial dependent on personal relationship with Massa and Missus? - Were couple who managed to stay together allowed to be buried together? - Were the slaves blood relatives or did they come from anywhere? - What were they buried with? - How were children treated? -Of the bones that are left, was this dude the mythical 'good master', or were they usually malnourished, broken? and where? - Did anything survive which would tell us the names, their occupations, their dreams? - Are there people other than slaves and Massa's immediate family buried there? - Are there any descendents that could possibly be found? Doesn't matter that it's 'only' next door. It matters that it's there, and there's no concern about preserving it even though it's 'only' next door. If it's 'only' next door, what's the problem with setting that land off-limits? Without the limits, it becomes no big deal to forget that it's there at all. And with that forgetting, comes the denials about our past, about what was done, about who did it, about who lived through it, and about the people who survived it. It becomes unimportant. If it's unimportant enough to preserve, it's unimportant enough to remember. /my pussy is laid like a cat's tongue //a little more sand won't make much more of a difference, babe |

This is why I want to be cremated. Sooner or later they're going to run out of places to bury people. I don't want to be some archeological experiment 500 years from now. |

So they buried 80 Wal-Mart workers that decided to vote yes for a union? |

Wal-Mar is putting it there because they can. Grease the right palms and that store is being built. Wal-Mar recently ran an ad campaign to give away '$1 million' for hunger relief of Facebook, and my hometown (see handle above) won '$50,000' because of the turnout of votes on Facebook. Wal-Mart turned around and gave the money to an organization 50 miles away, that was already doing 501c3 work with them to buy a refrigerated truck. Granted, the money is going to a charity, and it will help deliver food to those in need, including in my home town.....but if you're going to tout in your promotion that Kokomo turned out the votes, give the money to an organization in that town, don't just write another check to an existing partner because it's easier... |

Also in Alabama, Walmart has plans to build on a prehistoric burial mound. I have friends who are currently excavating at the site. |

| freewill GoSurfing: I believe the day will come that you can no longer even be buried in the ground, and all existing cemeteries will be used for their real estate value. I mean, don't you kind of have to be a self important person to want a permanent little spot on this earth? Lots of crazy ethical questions are going to come up in the future. I looked into this once, and it seems that a number of Western countries already have to address this. As I understand it, the resolution is anything from "it's been long enough that nobody alive would remember you", all the way down to "you're renting this for a couple of years, then we're digging you up and dissolving what's left in acid". Cramming the bones into a small box at the foot of the grave to make room for new bodies or dumping the bones into a mass grave to get them out of the way isn't uncommon, either. In any case, yeah, the idea that a grave is yours into perpetuity seems pretty naive. We've certainly steamrolled many poorly documented graves without even realizing it. ExperianScaresCthulhu: If it's that unimportant to steamroll over a gravesite, why not steamroll over all gravesites equally. I suppose that, ultimately, all gravesites will be treated equally. / Charred to nothing when the sun becomes a red giant. |

It's cool. The store is being staffed by 80 slaves, so it all evens out. |
