You're thinking of Rosemary, one of the sisters. She was retarded, and as she got older she became more and more unmanageable. She had the mental capacity of a 5 year or so, in an adult body. She was constantly getting violent with the family out of frustration, leaving the house at night, getting farked by men who took advantage of her inability to reason... it was not safe for her at all. They had her lobotomized, I think, to try to control her violent impulses and make her more manageable - that was the recommended treatment at the time. She ended up a blank-staring shell and her sister Eunice never forgave their parents for it.

Sad, really - but that's how things were back then for the mentally disabled. Pretty horrific.
