So, I don't follow this Facebook stuff too closely so excuse the ignorance, but is advertising and personal information enough to sustain Facebook's profits and justify such a large IPO? Because as far as I know, they are not producing anything else of monetary value, or am I missing some other good or service they are providing that is profitable?

The only other thing I know of is in-game sales. You know coins or whatnot you use to buy upgrades or unlock outfits.

But yes, their stock price is super over valued based on their current PE ratio.

Air hole. You aren't gonna stay at the top of your financial game by frivolously throwing money around for air holes, man.

You seem to be unfamiliar with the concept of a punchable face. It has nothing to do with personality or actions.

Google makes their money through advertising. I guess if they have the audience then they expect to generate revenue. I think the company can be profitable, but unless there's some kind of diversification (like how GE's prime revenue stream is now financial services) I doubt Facebook can live up to the hype.

The only reason is had such a blowout IPO is that it refused to go public for about three times as long as a typical company, so it had grown much larger by the time it actually did. (And because of that, had to institute draconian rules that any insiders would be fired for selling their stock to anyone but another shareholder or the Russian capital company they hired for that purpose.) Google would have had a similarly insane IPO if they had held off as long; look at how quickly their valuation blew up. Due to that, however, they're not nearly as good a buy, more of a good hold, just like Google is now. IPO buyers like fresh meat, not seasoned companies.

As for real value, according to internet statisticians, 20% of all web page views point to facebook.com, and more time is spent eyeballing facebook and its offshoots than any other web site. That's staggering, and if they can avoid over-advertising the way Fox killed MySpace, they have an enormous captive audience of eyeballs to monetize. Again, look at Google, heck, look at all other media platforms in the world to see that advertising is where the real money is, especially demographic targeted advertising, not content. Not to mention that they've become the preferred platform (along with Twitter) for politicians to engage their constituents, which gives them a bit of political clout.

If that's what he's getting married in, I'd hate to see what he wears the rest of the time. Either his wife flatly does not give a shiat about appearances in a social disorder kind of a way or she does not really care about him (and getting married to him).

If she helped start FB then she's probably a billionaire (on paper) in her own right.

If they're smart they'll diversify and bank a billion or two that's not tied up in FB. That way no matter what happens, they can live like royalty as the rest of the company burns.

It probably won't. From what I've read, although Zuckerburg can be terse and confrontational, he was not nearly as much of an asshole as Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Steve Jobs or just about any business leader that achieved success at a young age. He also seems like he's extremely hard-working and disciplined, and hes not the type to be concerned about the trappings of power or big money. He will mellow as he gets older, and he'll probably eventually be a kindly philanthropist by the time he's in his mid 40s.

It's his goddamn wedding. His wife took time out of her schedule to pick out a nice dress, he could have put some effort into his attire. It's not as if he can't afford a tailor.

Some guys just don't wear clothes well, and i sympathize because I am one of them. When i was much younger I was a wholesale jewelry manufacturer for a while, and there were times I had to wear suits - and I never really looked good. Of course, we are talking about the late seventies, and the men's suits of that era were so spectacularly hideous that I can't clearly remember what they looked like - my memory has mercifully softened the details, as it does in time with traumatic experiences.
Anyway, best wishes to Mr. Z and his new bride - may they have a long and happy life. Even if the Facebook thing doesn't work out, I'm pretty sure they won't be having any trouble paying the gas bill.
