Some slideshows aren't so bad. The ones that load a whole new page that is largely identical to the previous one are the ones that really suck. I really don't mind the ones that pop up that you can flick though. |

Some of those people need to stop looking for jobs and start making their own. Especially that interior designer. |

That kind of slide show isn't bad. The ones that reload the entire page suck That being said. What kind of story was that? Five pictures of jobless people. |

I'm suree that any of the fine young women pictured could find employment in the lucrative sex trade sector. I hear it's booming. |

Ludendorff's Ghost: Enlist. That's the plan. If safe, high-paying jobs were plentiful and education was cheap, we couldn't keep an all-volunteer Army. |

After earning a master's in teaching, Stephanie Melrose is living back home with her parents so she can repay her college loans faster. She is a math teacher at Rainier Beach High School. That one is not a failure. She has a job in her field and she is paying back her loans. |

Yea, because you couldn't do the exact same slideshow about Gen Xers who got laid off 10 years ago after the dot-com bust and then got laid off again in the past few years. And you surely couldn't make a slideshow like that about the current Baby Boomers that got laid off and can't find jobs because they're too old. /lacking sleep and judgmental |

That millennial doesn't trust big business to give job security. What a stupid thing to say. You make your own job security by being the best. If I get laid off, I'll get a higher-paying job because I'm a very profitable employee. That's happened three times. Get very good at something lucrative. Or cry. Your choice. |

No, I accept that getting laid off three times doesn't necessarily mean you're a bad employee. Some industries are like that. Insisting repeatedly and smugly that you're an awesome employee, on the other hand... |

I'm left-leaning but it irks me that self-acknowledged left-leaning media like MSNBC talks endlessly about all kinds of inequality but never ever seems to look at the effect of individual decisions on income, employment, and general social standing. |

I actually liked that slideshow. Not the content, as it's pretty easy to find jobless people; more than half of all people don't have jobs. But the website design was good and the photos were too. |

She is a math teacher at Rainier Beach High School. That one is not a failure. She has a job in her field and she is paying back her loans. Winners don't go into education. And why do you get a master's degree to teach at a high school? In many states it is required. When you get your bachelor's degree and obtain your teaching certificate it is only good for so many years (usually 5-10) At the end of that time you need a Master's degree (or equivalent graduate credits) to renew your certificate. No certificate, no job. And I agree that education is a loser's field. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to go into education. You can't really make a living in that field any more because the requirements to keep your job outweigh the income (see: federal race to the top program in addition to cuts in most states of salaries and benefits) If you or someone you know wants to go into education - tell them no. They are better off working at McDonalds (and sadly that isn't hyperbole). |

And why do you get a master's degree to teach at a high school? You get a higher salary if you have a masters degree. Plus, if you don't find a job the first year out of school., getting the masters buys you some time until the county can raise taxes on landowners. It does appear to be a bit of cock though. In my county, you MUST get a masters degree after a certain number of years, or your license expires. |

Let's see if I can do this Fark-style. 1. Subby, you got a problem with somebody eating Doritos and Oreos at the same time? 2. Satan is the invention of civilzation-crushing evil religions. Go away with your sky fairies and devils and whatnot. 3. All those people studied worthless things like English, philosophy, music, and history, whereas I studied engineering and now have a lucrative job, a huge house, and so much money that I light my cigars off $100 bills. I am definitely not 35, living in my parents' basement, and taking a break from whichever MMORPG I'm addicted to right now. 4. I'd hit that one chick, if she paid me like 20 million dollars. |

And why do you get a master's degree to teach at a high school? Pay scales can vary pretty heavily depending on the degree you have (for example, in Seattle having a masters seems to be worth both about $7,000 a year in starting salary and a fair amount more in terms of having your salary cap out higher). Even with the loans I think she'll come out ahead in the long run if she stays long enough. |

Pffft. It's Hazen High in Renton. The job market consists of tweaker, gangster, hooker, street-corner window-washer, dealer, pusher, addict, thief, bum, and city council member. The average worker has three jobs in a 30-yr career. In this economic market, it's six, with long periods of bumming in between. Be ready to change jobs often, 'cause yer gonna have to. I'm retired and not in this mess, but I've got a word for ya. If you trust the company to provide work and maintain your retirement fund, yer gonna be broke at 60yo. Unless you control your retirement funds, your later years are gonna suck. Get an IRA and continue to donate monthly. Add a college fund for each kid +1 (It'll come in handy, you'll see.) Make sure your spouse has a retirement fund of their own 'cause two can't live as cheaply as one, no matter what she says. ...And be sure to have a $10K along with the above if ya wanna live good. |
