"I eat the whole fish," said Grayson, of Camden, who mostly catches catfish and striped bass. "I've been eating them all my life, so why should I stop now?"

Indeed.

FTFA: To scientists, routinely taking one's catch home is the health equivalent of smoking and sunbathing - an anachronistic practice to be discouraged.

WTF I don't even...do they mean from catches made directly downstream from sewage plants, or is there some anti-fishing cabal of scientists that view it like smoking? Pretty sure I could eat a damn trout I caught on the Madison or Yellowstone, if I didn't C & R.

I have been made furious by this stupidity.

I've pulled many a catfish out of the Delaware, and I've never seen one that I would eat. There's just something not-quite-right about the way they look. I got spiked by one once and my hand was infected for a couple of weeks. Nasty buggers they are, but fun to catch, especially on light line/tackle. The stripers*, however, don't really spend enough time in the river to become polluted, and they're delicious.

Because there's an industrial recycling plant and a sewage treatment facility downstream now? Was this guy born and raised before cause-and-effect was discovered?

I really think that they should test them to see what is really going on with any body of water. With that said I totally think there is a monopoly of food here in this country. Pre WWII we were encouraged to grow our own food and raise or own chickens and eggs. Now it is so regulated its not funny.

If you're not bright enough or far-sighted enough to understand the difference, then, yes, I guess it would be a decision point.

There are plenty of places where you can catch perfectly edible, uncontaminated fish. That site isn't one of them.

Not here. Back yard gardens? Go nuts. Front yard gardens? Go nuts. Heck, folks in this area provide videos on how to actually make raised-bed gardens in your front yard. "Victory gardens" are still popular here, as are community gardens tended by local residents.

Here, you can fish all day long for common carp, crawfish, bullfrogs, smelt or unclassified marine invertebrates without a license. For the tastier critters, you'll need a catch record card, but those cards are free - the state tracks those critters, but doesn't really limit you on them. There are a few regulations for certain fish, like salmon, but that's because industrial fishing has really hammered those guys. You can even keep chickens in your back yard, even in urban settings, provided you follow certain limits - the county government doesn't just allow it, but provides instructions on how to do it well.

It's amazing what you can do when you don't poison the land and water, and don't restrict people from catching or growing their own food. Perhaps you should move to Washington - it's nice here.

Also I love the paranoid comments at the bottom of TFA, about the damn gubmit tellin' us wut we can eat!

That's right, advisory information about limiting your intake of contaminated fish is exactly that, the government telling you what you can eat. It's probably 'Big Fisheries' that are behind it too, I bet, buying laws so you have to eat their fish.

People never cease to amaze me.

There is a fresh water lake in NV that is caused by river run off. It was discovered that the fish there could not be eaten because of the high mercury levels caused by old mines in the area. At the lake swimming, catch and release, and boating is okay (it is a rather large lake).

I was at the lake one day and wanted to see the dam and took the kid with me. There was a couple from the town nearby ahead of us. The man started talking how he and his dad fished and ate what they caught before the high mercury levels were discovered and claimed that there was no effect on him.

He looked and acted a bit slow. I wasn't sure if it was from all the mercury he ingested, the drugs, or both.

The Delaware River in Philly/Camden is pretty gross. North of Trenton where there's not so much old industry and it isn't tidal? Go nuts. But in Philly and Camden... I wouldn't eat anything that came out of the water there, either. God knows what all those old chemical plants have leaked into the river.

I live in an old, non HOA suburb here in richmond Virginia, my yard is a half acre lot, and a great deal of it comprised of raised bed, and in ground vegitable garden, i got tomato, pepper, egg plant, sweet corn, sunflower, potato and aspergas in the front yard, more tomato, summmer squash, zucchini, loufa and birdhouse gourd, more sweet corn, and yard long string bean in the back yard.
The county rule for chickens is 400 square feet of yard, i got that, and they'll soon be joining the garden scape. A nieghbor down the street has chickens already, and a couple of goats.
Another nieghbor has bees, and ill be doning that soon as well as my dead step father kept bees as a part time advocation and i already have all the stuff.

Hell, im thinking about going out and getting a horse troth and setting up an aquacultre thing that has vegies on top and talapia below. Dont neccesrily care for talapia mind you, but they grow fast, and dont need a lot of room.
This is not even talking about the herb garden tht features a bay leaf tree, of which im rooting some cuttings that will be sold at market for $10 per baby tree, all the onion sets that sell for $5 a cluster. The honey comb caps will sell for $25.

Will my little home enterprise keep me from going to the grocery store?
No.
But its fun and fresh vegies and what not you grow yourself are always tastier.

I used to work for TVA assessing fish and invertebrate populations in streams. We would electrofish for four hours and usually catch anywhere from 500 to 2,000 fish. Since some of the streams had no road access we had to ask permission to cross landowners' property. One guy would let us use his driveway for access if we gave him the two biggest fish we got that day.

The biggest fish were just downstream of where he was straight-piping into the river. Bon appetit.

If only it were limited to homeowners' associations. Unfortunately, many "cities", I use the term loosely and somewhat derisively, have outlawed front yard vegetable gardens; I suppose because outlawing chickens wasn't enough to satisfy those people who made us all miserable in high school.

Not only are front yard vegetable gardens allowed in many cities, homeowners can be fined daily for refusing to rip them up. The city can prevent you from selling the home in the future if the fines aren't paid. I don't know of anyone going to jail over a front yard vegetable garden, but, sadly, it really wouldn't surprise me.

We left a city two years ago that had outlawed front yard vegetable gardens. We were annexed into another city last year. For now, front yard vegetable gardens are legal in this city, but I'm not sinking money into one. I figure it's only a matter of time before front yard vegetable gardens are illegal here as well.
