So. Do something. Bankroll an initiative or make some sort of constructive effort to make a change. Otherwise you're just another armchair quarterback.

Yeah - do something! Write your congressman! Pen an op-ed! Go on the radio...oh, wait.

I love Penn, used to listen to his radio show all the time, watch Bullshiat, have seen P&T live many times. His very entertaining, and a really smart, well informed guy.

But every once in a while, he gets his head rammed right up his arse, and he just gets everything wrong.

Thanks,

We'll probably have a gay AND married president (as in, married to another guy, not some wide-stance GOP thing) before we legalize weed.

It is possible to both be right, and such a self-righteous jackass that you turn off an audience that might otherwise agree with you. Penn Jillette falls into this category.

Obama should be saying what Penn is saying, that his life (and those of many other people) would have been ruined by an arrest for drug possession, and that we are ruining young people's lives, especially urban and minority youths.

However, stoners don't vote, and those who do grew up on "Reefer Madness" so that's going to dictate our drug policy for a while.

I like Penn, he's alright. I wouldn't rag on him for not doing drugs but being for this issue. It's called, caring about an issue that doesn't directly serve his interests.

With the admission that Obama made, doesn't that mean that his house could be raided and his stuff confiscated if they find illegal drugs?

Does Mr. Jillette think that someone other than Barack Obama or Mitt Romney is going to win the election? No? Alright. Out of those two, who does he think aligns more closely with his goals: Barack Obama or Mitt Romney?

1 in 6 people in prison for marijuana? 15 percent?

I call shenanigans. Even NORML says it's only 1 in 8, or about 12.5%.

http://norml.org/news/2006/10/12/nea rly-one-in-eight-us-drug-prisone rs -are-behind-bars-for-pot-taxpayers-spe nding-over-1-billion-annually-to -incarcerate-pot-offenders

And even a quick glance at NORML's stats vs. JD stats or others shows marijuana proponents have a definition of "in jail for marijuana" so loose it rattles.

In prison for a murder you committed with THC in your blood? You're "in prison for marijuana."

In prison for killing 2 police officers who caught you with an RV stuffed with pot? You're "in prison for marijuana."

Now I agree with a lot of what he said -- if Obama had been busted for what he cheerfully admits to now he'd have a felony record and no way would he be president. And it's crazy to throw someone in jail for using marijuana.

But I'd love to see some trustworthy stats on how many people are "in prison for marijuana" -- viz., in prison for no other reason except that they were using marijuana for personal recreational and/or medical use. Period.

A friend of mine lives in Vegas, and she says Penn is a notorious douchebag.

One friend of hers was on a flight and got bumped up to first class for some reason and just so happened to end up seated next to Penn... She orders a drink from the FA, and Penn just starts lecturing and needling and moralizing about how she shouldn't drink, and just kept going and going till like 30-40 minutes later she asked to FA if she could go back to coach.

Another time, he goes with one of the crew guys from their stage show when he's going to get a tattoo. The whole time the tattoo artist is working on his buddy, Penn is just prattling on about how the tattoo artist shouldn't smoke or drink, till finally she tells him that if he doesn't shut his piehole, he would be waiting for his friend outside.

I find the guy entertaining, and I agree with a lot he has to say, but he sounds like a typical annoying libertarian douchebag,

I read a DOJ stat recently that said 83 percent of those in prison for ANY drug-related offense already had multiple convictions on their records for prior violent crimes.

I really like Penn. As a far left wing liberal (I believe in democratic oversight/regulation of industry and finance) I really look to people like Penn as "the other side", the people who believe something fundamentally different than me, but who still want good things for good people. Penn is someone I really, really disagree with. But he expresses uses mostly facts, mostly reason, when expressing his opinion. Granted he doesn't always use facts and reason when expressing his opinion, but neither do I. Sometimes he just gets angry and yells, so do I. That's okay. But time and time again he does interviews and writes little pieces and incorporates segments in his shows that express his anarchist opinion by citing sound research, scientifically accepted truths, and above all appealing to reason rather than emotion. He's a good dude. I'd like to have a beer with him, but I guess he doesn't do that.

I went over this already a few days ago: There's a big difference between JAIL (sentence under a year) and PRISON (sentence over a year). Plus, there's a difference between MEDIUM-Security prison and MAXIMUM security prisons, depending on how good a person you're going to be inside.

If you've only been busted for possession, even felony possession, and don't have any priors or enhancements they can stick you with (guns, gangs, outstanding warrants or domestic violence beefs), and get any kind of lawyer at all, you're just not going to go to PRISON for smoking pot, I don't care what the pro-pot lobby says. And if you are, then you did something ELSE besides "just smoke pot", like shoot at the cops when they came to arrest you or run when they tried to pull you over.

What about selling pot? Selling pot will land you in prison, especially if it's a lot. If you get caught with 25 pounds of pot, you go to prison. How about growing pot? If you get caught growing pot, especially if it's a lot, you go to prison.

This raises a question I've thought about. Say the law about marijuana possession is repealed. What happens to those that are serving time in prison for that crime? Besides being released? Is there more than saying, sorry for taking up x years of your life; no hard feelings?

Love how Obama claimed he would call back the feds from medical marijuana clubs, did it for one year, than the next year ended up going even more full throttle against medical cannabis than Bush did. Just another politician. At least he didn't arrest Chong, I guess.

I have a question for the people defending Obama on this: he is basically continuing the Bush era policies on the War on Drugs. Were you in support of what George W did and you are basically glad Obama continued the policies, or does this issue mean nothing to you and you just want to support your leader no matter how horrible the policies are?

/Hey wait, that applies to War
//And the bail outs.

The Obama administration needs to hear from its constituents that its policy towards marijuana is outdated, needlessly right-wing and ignorant of the benefits of marijuana in a freedom-loving society.

Does that mean I automagically vote against him in spite? I think not. It's far more likely a Democrat is going to legalize marijuana than a Republican.

With Romney, I'm even worried about the legal status of alcohol and coffee.

Anyway, for weed to be legalized or at least decriminalized at the federal level, I have a feeling it can only be done by a president who's a conservative non-libertarian Republican. It's going to take a "Nixon goes to China" type action.

obama probay wont do anything to stop the drug war. its merely an opinion. but police are getting more vicious and extralegal, committing horrible crimes with impunity. if he thinks its ok for your dog to be shot on sight when the swat arrives at your house mistakenly looking for a methlab, then it sort of follows that any collateral damage inflicted on the populace is kosher for the sake of the drug war and our nations security. tie it all back to security. feel secure yet?

why does Chapo Guzman the sinaloa cartel boss thank Bush and Obama for continuing the drug war? If they were winning then i would think he would be cursing them.
