| timujin wow... I've seen a lot of wildlife roaming around the urban L.A. area, but I never would have thought a mountain lion would end up in downtown Santa Monica... . . . /we have mule deer that wander around where I work, they even use the crosswalk |

| Calmamity What the hell is a "baby" mountain lion. |

| spman Of course, the other headline for this story would have been "Residents sue city of Santa Monica for not shooting Mountain Lion after it ate six cats, a dog, and mauled grandma". Which headline would you prefer? |

If they got close enough to take that picture... why couldn't they tranquilize it... or throw a net on it or something. |

spman I'd prefer the "eating the pets and mauling grandma" one, because mountain lions are cool and my grandma doesn't live there. |

Officer 1: What are we gonna do? Officer 2: We can capture it and then set it free afterwards in a safer environment. Officer 1: You think that's a good idea? Officer 2: Why not? Officer 1: It's a dangerous animal. Officer 2: Dude, we're humans. We are the most dangerous animal on the planet. Our brains are huge. We made it to the moon. Invented internet porn. Officer 1: It's got big teeth. It might bite us. Officer 2: Yeah. I don't wanna get bit, man. Fark it, let's just shoot it from a safe distance and tell everyone it was coming right at us and it was either it or us. Officer 1: Doesn't look very big, to be honest. Might just be a baby mountain lion. Officer 2: Optics, man. It only looks small when it's far away. It's probably 20 feet in length. Never underestimate your prey. Think of the children Officer 1: And America. Let's do it... Officer 1 & 2: **BANG**BANG**BANG**BANG***it's coming right at us***BANG**BANG**BANG** |

We had a mountain lion on the loose here in Chicago a number of years ago, and the police eventually shot it. The public outcry was hilarious. It was amazing how many people were saying that "experts" should have been called in to tranquilize the animal, that there was no need to kill it. And when one "expert" from animal control was interviewed he said that they had absolutely no experience with tranquilizing a mountain lion and would have had no idea how much tranquilizer to use! To be honest I would have preferred to see the animal captured and then give to one of the local zoos, but it was running around a residential neighborhood and was seen by people leaping 6' tall fences like they were not even there. And not everyone knew what was going on. There was one video clip of the cat running across the street while a woman and her child were walking in the back ground. It would have taken time to get animal control there and the cat could have attacked someone. At the time killing it the cat was the best option. |

| shower_in_my_socks Dexterman: So suddenly they go from "hey, let's tranq it" to "KILL IT KILL IT" because they're worried about the public? YES. I live a few blocks from where this happened. One residential block to the west is Palisades Park and the beach, full of people. One block to the south is the 3rd Street Promenade, an outdoor mall that is full of people. The entire area is one of the best "walking neighborhoods" in all of LA. There are joggers, bicyclists, etc. everywhere. Lots of families with little kids. And obviously it wasn't too afraid of people or it wouldn't have been anywhere near that area. From what I read earlier, they tried to tranq it and when they shot it with the dart, it bolted. At that point, you have to shoot because it could disembowel an adult or someone's kid or pet in a matter of seconds. It could be in the park or at the Promenade in half a minute. Imagine a scared, drugged mountain lion going berserk in an outdoor mall, and then imagine the police trying to explain afterward that they had it cornered and then let it get away because they were afraid some people would be all frowny-faced that they shot the poor little 90-pound predator. |

A mountain lion in Santa Monica? I'd be willing to bet some genius thought it would be a good idea to keep it as a pet and it got away while he was busy drugging up runaways to act in porn films. |

There was a rabid mountain lion around here a couple weeks ago. It attacked some guys dog and he killed it with a frying pan. The best part is that nobody mourned for the poor kitty. Pretty much everyone's reaction was "Awesome!" |

Bad day for mountain lions: Link In a perfect world, it would be great to tranquilize the cat, and then transport her out of town, where she would be let loose, and everyone would live happily ever after. In the real world, mountain lions are territorial, and if the cat has decided that your neighborhood is now her territory, she'll be back. And hungry. |

Indeed, and unlike in submittard's headline, it also wasn't a baby -- it was an 80-90lb female adult. Plenty strong enough to do some pretty nasty damage when panicked. |

Pretty much everyone's reaction was "Awesome!" Link I think some of the people who get upset confuse these with a lynx or some other wild cat. These are supposed to get to be upwards of 200ish pounds, they're not simply a 'big cat'. I certainly wouldn't want one running loose, even a juvenile. |

Link Yeah seriously, look at the size of it's paw, it's got to have 2"+ claws. As the article and map states, officially they don't exist in the eastern half of the US, but there have been sightings, sometimes even photos captured on deer cameras. |

Hell, let's just annihilate every other living thing on the planet and be done with it already. Humans will never be able to coexist with the rest of nature for one reason or another, most of them retarded. |

laulaja: Tnx Coelacanth for link to pic of young mtn lion while she still lived. Wishing tranq woulda worked doesn't help, but I sure do wish it had ....... authorities mighta been able to let her live. You're welcome. It's heartbreaking for me too. I used to know a wildlife artist, Richard Lowe, and he had trainers bring wild animals to his store so he could paint them from life. That included mountain lions and this was back when they thought they were going to go extinct. Richard allowed me to play with one of the mountain lions for a little while. We have to start working on better methods of capturing wildlife wandering our streets. They're making a comeback. There are better solutions than killing them. |
