When do we get the mars colony? For fark sake, I've already been waiting for what seems like forever. Meanwhile jersey shore is fully funded. |

I was unaware it started up again. I thought it had a stuck set of wheels or something. Or was that the other one? I just thought the second had finally stopped moving. /cool documentary |

basemetal: That thing just keeps going and going. /unlike NASA funding....... If there were some brown aliens up there I'm sure we could fund NASA indefinitely with our defense budget. |

Obviously we need to pitch a Mars colony reality tv show. Unfortunately it would probably mean the early colonists are all idiotic attention whores, but what can ya do? |

I wouldn't mind launching most of those people into the cold vacuum of space. Though that might be considered an act of war if they were to be picked up by E.T. |

Three more miles and it'll be the most traveled rover ever! Come on little guy! Show them Ruskies what's for! |

I just thought the second had finally stopped moving. /cool documentary According to the NASA/JPL rover website, it seems Spirit is considered dead (hasn't responded to recent commands), but Opportunity is still going strong with over 21 miles on the odometer. Original life span was only predicted to be 1 kilometer! http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/missio n/status.html |

Because we've been spending all our time and money low Earth orbit building the space station. SpaceX looks to have that job now. If we can just keep the morons on capitol hill from screwing up the funding for Orion, we'll be able to get beyond the moon one day. |

Why, O WHY, don't we have a city on the moon? Is there nothing to exploit? NASA should have been doing that for the last thirty years, instead of building space trucks and campsites in orbit. You have failed us, NASA. GET on the moon and stay there! |

That's right folks, it's a fully stocked, plush beach house on Mars. Cameras in every room. You'll all be famous. Just step over to the launchpad and board the ark. It's the one marked 'B'. |

Love astonomy, always have. Ive read dozens of books on the subject, owned 3x telescopes in my time. Trips beyond the moon are a fantastic waste of time and money. It's a nerd spending fest / circle jerk. Get off my ET lawn. |

Mr. Potatoass: Screw Mars. Terraform Venus. How do you stop an out of control atmosphere, though? Venus is just an out of control furnace of gases and lost all its' water long ago. Mars makes sense in the long run. Then icy moons. |

itsfullofstars Orion is a crew vehicle. Building it now is akin to buying a car seat with no plans for buying... a FARKING car. /// obama killed Constellation, but this is fark where facts are banned, so go ahead and obfuscate all you like. |

Mr. Potatoass: Screw Mars. Terraform Venus. With one you need to add an Earth atmosphere of nitrogen and CO2 and maybe put some mirrors in orbit to reflect sunlight. It's kinda small so the atmosphere might escape over time but if civilization survives you could just keep adding water from comets or something. With the other you need to remove 89.5 Earth atmospheres worth of CO2 and sulfuric acid before you could add the nitrogen, all the water and hydrogen has escaped gigayears ago, and you'd need to let the entire crust cool from 700º C before anything else was possible. Plus dealing with 2.6 times Earth solar flux and a day that's 243 Earth days long. Yeah, Venus is definitely the easier project. |

NASA should have been doing that for the last thirty years, instead of building space trucks and campsites in orbit. You have failed us, NASA. GET on the moon and stay there! The grumpy uncle in me tells you and the rest of humanity that you can colonize the moon and Mars after you populate Antarctica. Did you know that Penguin-land has water? Lots of of it. Air too, for when your juvenile enthusiasm busts a hole in your habitat shell. And it's a lot closer, so Mom and Dad have a chance to get help to you when you inevitably get into trouble. No kids, you're not getting a dime from me for your extraterrestrial fantasies until you make something of your seventh continent. Lawn. Off it. |

ShannonKW: No kids, you're not getting a dime from me for your extraterrestrial fantasies until you make something of your seventh continent. Oh, please. Mars has more promise than Antarctica. For one thing, you can warm up Mars, however hard that might be, without screwing with the rest of the world. Mars has a lot of problems, but two-mile sheets of ice aren't one of them. |

No kids, you're not getting a dime from me for your extraterrestrial fantasies until you make something of your seventh continent. Lawn. Off it. It's off the main page, but I gotta answer. the moon would have been our proving ground, if we would colonize it. Yeah, Antarctica has water amd air, but it won't teach us the lessons of living in space. The space station is a artificial construct that, again, won't teach us to live in Space. Both for the simple fact that the people there know they're just a quick hop away from being home. On Luna ('the moon' is such a generic term), It ain't gonna be like coming out of the tent in the living room. They are gonna have to make a go of it.The moon is the 1st step in getting to other planets. Until we learn the lessons of space, we're just gonna be visitors wherever we go. "my Juvenile enthusiasm" really is funny. I'm 62yo, junior. Just started my ssa checks (what a piddling sum). I've been waiting for my moon cities and flying cars prolly longer than you've been alive. You really need to up your meds a bit. As a species, we have some VERY important things to do. We've made some significant steps, but like most Government projects, we've gotten side-tracked. Let's get back to the subject...We need to get OFF this planet. If only to safeguard our species. Enthusiasm? More like desperation... |
