Alas, the vetting of Mitt Romney's Mormonism by the mainstream press has begun

Mr. Romney's penchant for rules mirrors that of his church, where he once excommunicated adulterers and sometimes discouraged mothers from working outside the home.

Does this mean no women in his administration?

On the plus side it would mean no Newt in his administration.

Meh. The only valid religious question for a politician is, "Do you understand that this is a secular nation and there is no place for your metaphysical beliefs in the decisions you make in the public sphere, should you be elected?"

Sure. Some politicians see zero problem with saying they will govern according to the bible.

Mormonism is disturbing on a number of different levels and I don't think I would vote for a Mormon under any conceivable circumstances, but that's a moot point because Mitt Romney is Mitt Romney.

His religion isn't the problem. It's the fact that he is willing to bend to whatever position is politically advantageous for him.

And, right now, the moral right has a huge amount of pull in our society and government. Why on earth should I even begin to believe that Romney wouldn't grab the wheel and make a sharp right turn on domestic and economic issues?

They think that they will become a god over their own planet if they have been really good when they die.

Seriously. Sure magic underpants, secrecy, baptizing dead people, white ethnocentrism, general chauvinism, door to door proselytizing, serious issues with gays, no swearing, no booze, no caffeine, and general odd behavior are all strange, but thinking you become a god with your own planet to run is just plain made-up.

But an atheist politician would have to consider the potential to lose votes if they're honest about it, depending on where they're running for office. I don't think an atheist would necessarily be more/less likely to be honest about it. They would still be a politician first and foremost.

Simple economic and social policy as dictated by Christ. It doesn't work for most right wing Christians.

But, let's talk about the Mormon belief in a Kolob.

You actually aren't too far off from the truth.

I had fantasies like that too. And I knew they were fantasies. Maybe it is just the Agnostic in me talking, but I just don't know how you get to that kind of belief structure. Mitt has been in it for the money and power, which makes some sense, but the masses that blindly tithe each month and actually believe in something that was clearly made up by Joseph Smith in the same way that Gary Gygax forged D&D will always astound me.
