| Babwa Wawa Anyone interested in the transformation of Kaczynski into the Unabomber should listen to "Oops" - the first Radiolab episode from season 8. It's unbelievable. |

"While all members of the class who submit entries are included, we regret publishing Kaczynski's references to his convictions and apologize for any distress that it may have caused others," What did they expect? I thought those Harvard folks were supposed to be wicked smaht. |

I thought those Harvard folks were supposed to be wicked smaht. You don't even have to be "wickit smaht" to read the farking entries. Or to read the list of grads and say, "Hmmmm... isn't he the Unabomber? Maybe we should leave him out of this". That said, this gets me thinking about what I'll say in a couple years when my fundamentalist Baptist High School wants info for our 30 year reunion. |

Awful brave of them to open correspondence from ol' Teddy. |

| IAmRight They regret that they printed it but they're glad he didn't send them a bomb. /also, I guess the 8 life sentences is an award - he did earn 'em, after all. |

Just because something is British doesn't mean it's the best. |
||
| IAmRight Cambridge is higher in some rankings, I suppose...but only for having more international faculty/students. Of course a smaller country with a bunch of small nations around it is going to have a more international base than one in the US. |

I guess the ranking system that had Harvard No. 1 WAS from England, so it was probably pretty dumb. All the others have Harvard at No. 2 behind Cambridge, and breaks it down - Harvard is ahead of Cambridge on everything but international faculty/students. /it's not like there's a significant difference at that level anyway |

ecmoRandomNumbers: Kaczynski is far from the worst sociopath to graduate from an Ivy League School. I'm looking at you, New York and Washington DC. Why do you call him a sociopath? He clearly has an ethos, and millions of non-sociopaths have killed in the name of a cause they believed in. You may think that cause is unworthy, and I would agree, and the guy clearly needs to be in prison for the rest of his life, but you can't say he wasn't sincere. He was no thrill killer. |

How do his actions morally differ from those of a soldier who believes in his cause? You're kidding, right? I hope you're kidding. But let's break it down. 1. A solider signs up to serve his country, and to kill only when ordered by the leader of his country, duly elected or authorized by the people of his country, to kill those whom his leaders and his nation deems enemies of his nation. Kaczynski took orders from no one, but merely took it upon himself to designate certain people "enemies" based upon his own criteria of who should be enemies and who should not. 2. A soldier must operate under certain rules of engagement and may kill only valid targets assigned to him by his commanders and authorized by the leaders of his nation. Wars must be declared and civilians must be given opportunity to clear the field of battle; those who cannot must be considered invalid targets and may not be killed except where it is necessary to preserve the safety of one's own troops. Kaczynski killed in secret and without warning, his targets had no advance warning and his "war" was undeclared except in hindsight. All "targets" were valid to him and nobody was safe. 3. A soldier, no matter how deeply and truly he believes in his cause, has by joining an army--any army--agreed to abide by whatever rules his leaders have set. This is true whether his leaders are those of the US Army or the Irish Republican Army or Hezbollah. No soldier, of any army, may go out on his own without proper sanction from his leaders, and kill whomever he thinks needs killing. Reprisals in a terrorist army (or insurgency if you prefer) are far more ruthless than anything a "civilized" military ever dreamed of--ask anyone who was ever kneecapped by the IRA. Kaczynski answered to no one and obeyed no rules of engagement. He selected his targets at random and felt morally justified in killing anyone who died, no matter if it was the intended recipient or not. A true soldier not only kills who he is told to kill, he does not kill those who he is told not to kill, no matter how "deeply" he believes in his cause. Kaczynski was no soldier. At best you could call him an assassin; but you might as well call him a murderer, since that's what he was. |

Dummies x 2 I think it's actually a good thing that they included him, and his update. Let it serve as a reminder to the alumni that no matter how intelligent or well educated we are, sometimes life screws so hard with someone that they turn into something like he did. Sure, most criminals aren't that intelligent and come from 'lower' walks of life, but the upper crust isn't immune either. |

A soldier, no matter how deeply and truly he believes in his cause, has by joining an army--any army--agreed to abide by whatever rules ... How is that relevant? Soldiers choose who to kill based on strict rules, and so does he; he attacked people who helped to advance technology. Like soldiers, he accepted the possibility of collateral damage. "Following orders" is not moral; it is fundamentally amoral. After Nuremberg that should be obvious. Oh and your comments about a "true soldier" are naive drivel. For what it's worth I'm a veteran myself, with two deployments to Iraq and a Purple Heart. In 27 months in Iraq I ultimately killed no one, but I absolutely believe that anyone is capable of anything in the right- or wrong- situation. Fear and devotion to a cause are powerful motivators. And keep in mind that I'm not defending Kaczynski's actions, I'm just saying that he is not a sociopath. Perhaps I erred in using the word "morally" in my earlier post, that isn't exactly what I meant but I couldn't think of a better word. What I'm saying is just that it's incorrect and a little cowardly to label him a sociopath. He has a very strict moral code that happens to differ from the accepted norms, as well it should as it is abhorrent, and you can call him evil if you want, but he is not a sociopath. People just don't like to think that a very intelligent man could be so utterly and fundamentally, even horrifically, wrong, and wrong precisely because he followed his conscience. It's a frightening idea, so they try to just label him a monster so that we can put him on the shelf and stop thinking about him. |
