| Mentat Why didn't they just open the screen door and let the water in? |
||
| brerrabbit Haven't been stationed there in 24 years. I wonder if Walt Disney's old home away from home is still there. |

Four alarm is too spicy for my palette. |

I don't get the Red Lobster reference. |

All aboard the U.S.S. Fukushima! |

AverageAmericanGuy: I don't get the Red Lobster reference. Don't hurt yourself. Also, damn you subby, I laughed at it. |

| Yes this is dog I live about a half mile away from the base. I'm hoping I don't come home from work in the morning and get greeted by my dog with her new green glowing eyes. |

This is what happens when you let women serve on submarines, they leave on their hair curlers and it sets stuff on fire |

AverageAmericanGuy: I don't get the Red Lobster reference. Funny headline. But those things Red Lobster sells 1) aren't lobsters, and 2) ain't from anywhere near Maine. /if it doesn't have claws, it isn't a real lobster. |

Nonessential personnel have been removed from the sub. So essential personnel have to stay on the sub even though it's on fire? |
||
| lucksi
If only there was something around the submarine that you could immerse it in. /nice to see that you are irradiating US soil for a change for once //maybe |
||
| Yes this is dog Honestly, what horrible pictures. The distance between Pierce Island and that dock is not great, even a 10x zoom could have produces something better. |

It's just a really fast annealing. Ignore the smoke - that's to improve the smell in there. |

Yes this is dog: I live about a half mile away from the base. I'm hoping I don't come home from work in the morning and get greeted by my dog with her new green glowing eyes. I live about 15 miles north. Glad the wind ain't blowing our way... |
||
| Loucifer They have to want to get off. How do you get a crew to want to get off a submarine? How do you get a crew to want to get off a nuclear sub... |
||
| wallywam1 Loucifer: They have to want to get off. How do you get a crew to want to get off a submarine? How do you get a crew to want to get off a nuclear sub... Nice. |

They even have a big tank of them by the entrance. And their cheddar biscuits are yummy. |

lucksi: /nice to see that you are irradiating US soil for a change for once "For once"? Hanford, Idaho Falls, and anyone downwind of the Nevada test site would like a word with you... |

From where I am now, at work, it looks like there is still plenty of smoke hovering around the base. I'm about a mile upriver right now so it's hard to tell. |

Yes this is dog ![]() Do not worry residents of Southern Maine and New Hampshire. The plume of smoke coming out of the nuclear submarine can in no way hurt you. I |

On a serious note, since it was in drydock, at least the weapons were likely removed and they say the reactor is off. Just a bad fire in a confined space that will do a shiatload of damage. If its confined forward, there is little risk of any radiation whatsoever from getting out. Thats not to say there isn't some nasty stuff you wouldn't want to inhale in there, but nothing radioactive. |

I probably should've caveated that as the article I linked did. They have them, but you only get a Maine if you order a whole one. The lobster meat in all their other dishes is warm water langouste. Kinda makes Lobsterfest!™ seem less exciting. /claw meat ftw |

| Yes this is dog It smells like a burnt up electric motor outside right now, so I'm getting a kick. /I do not want to be smelling that all day, and I can only imagine it will be worse when I get closer to home. |

Because we care. We don't want you to suffer. We don't play nuclear games! Because we believe in life and our own people! And so. You know. This event. Does not exist. After all. Why would we have NUCLEAR wessels? That would be dangerous. That might lead to horrible HORRIBE disasers. Did I say might? OK We know for a fact that there will eventually be an accident. That is why we DON'T HAVE NUCLEAR SUBS IN THE FIRST PLACE! Thank you for your support. |

"Sorry guys, we will need you to stay on the sub. You're essential to this situation, as we can't have a controlled burn without a steady fuel supply. You're it". |

I'm going to Old Orchard beach tomorrow for the weekend, maybe I should pack some rad suits. |
||
| Badgerlad No need for rad suits, that's sooooo old world. |

Yes this is dog: Honestly, what horrible pictures. The distance between Pierce Island and that dock is not great, even a 10x zoom could have produces something better. These are probably the only things PNSY was willing to release at such short notice. Taking pictures of Department of Defense contractor plants tends to get into espionage territory if you're not careful. Which is why, for the longest time, Google maps didn't have a street view of my employer, but now : Looking at the South Gate. Tried to focus on the sign on top of the shack, can't find a good picture of the sign that says taking pictures of the place isn't allowed, which I guess makes sense. Anyway, all pictures of the plant and associated hardware are reviewed before being released to ensure that we aren't giving anything away unecessarily. |

Especially any time nuclear material is involved. I was stationed at the NPTU (nuclear training command) in Charleston, SC when I retired from the Navy. We had the ceremony out front by the flagpole, afterwards my family took some pictures of me in full getup there. On of the security guys came out and biatched us out for taking photos, even though you can't see the moored submarines used to train from there. The fences also had big signs that said deadly force was authorized, etc. |
