I was in Long Beach over the weekend having not been there in about eight years and indeed, no plastic bags.

If you want a paper bag, they charge you ten cents.

Not news. LA County and some of the other cities in the county banned them over a year ago. I don't know how 99 Ranch in Hacienda Heights manages without triple-bagging everything in plastic like they used to, but they do manage somehow.

We should all use reusable shopping bags that are better for the environment*, darn it!


* Except for the fact that many reusable bags:
- are made from more raw ingredients than the number of disposable bags they replace
- are printed with non-vegetable-based inks
- are made on the other side of the world and have to be shipped huge distances
- are, unlike many disposable bags, not biodegradable
- require consumers to actually purchase kitchen garbage bags, bags for wrapping leftovers, dog crap bags, and so on rather than reusing what they've brought home from the store
- get forgotten somewhere after only a couple of uses, leading to consumers buying or being given more and more and more of them
- are little more than "green washing", allowing companies an opportunity to put their logo on something to show how environmental they are
- contain chemical adhesives and other not-so-nice components along with their recycled bits
- do nothing to reduce the various little deli, produce, meat counter, bulk foods, etc. bags that we use throughout the grocery store
- may actually encourage our over-consumerism, since they reduce some of the guilt we should feel when we drive our gas guzzling cars to a giant store with huge, inefficient lighting systems and air conditioning for millions of cubic feet of space, to buy an over-packaged product that was made in a factory that spews out who-knows-what, probably halfway around the world, that we very likely don't need in the first place.

Most of the city of L.A. IS far from Orange County. Ventura County isn't, since the western part of the city goes up to the Ventura County line.

Paper pages are as environmentally harmful as plastic but in a different way. It takes much more water to make paper bags, as well as much more energy. A by product of paper bags is dioxin, a very toxic chemical. It cost more to distribute paper bags than plastic because they are heavier, and take up more space than plastic - i.e. higher transportation costs and more diesel fuel. That is why I believe that paper bags is not the answer.

Aside from the previous points raised, recyclable bags provide advertising for the merchants that customers pay for - i.e. names and logo's. Merchants should be paying customers to use their recyclable bags for advertising their store or product.

Howver the 'elephant in the living room' in reference to recyclable bags is they become contaminated with germs and bacteria over time unless they are washed on a regular basis. So where are these contaminated bags placed when you check out? Right where your food that you eat is placed! I suspect that sooner or later when a disease outbreak takes place, traced to a recycled bag, This subject will be rapidly reconsider - especially if people die.

What I consider the best solution is to get rid of paper, standard plastic, and recyclable bags entirely. Instead use a modified plastic bag with an additive, such as cornstarch (already available) that cause the bag to self destruct after a few days of sun exposure or decay rapidly in the ground - continue moisture exposure or food for bacteria and insects.

That's my opinion on this mess.

Ireland has a tax on plastic shopping bags for groceries. It works pretty well. Most people learn quickly bring their own.

I wish they would institute a ban such as this in my area, so when my SO brings them home and inevitably does not discard them properly my cat doesn't try to eat it. (She has been a thin plastic chewer her whole life and it is maddening).

We have a guy in this area w/ a public access show. He calls himself King the Legend Rayford Faulkner. He is a nut job and he wears a plastic bag on his head. Every once in a while you can see him walking around the city, a plastic bag on his head, tied under his chin. I think he would be outraged, OUTRAGED, by such a law.

I like them, you can make rope, and cloth from them, directly at home.

Something like this? Yes.
On the other hand, this is the wrong solution. I'd rather see them have grocers charge for them - a little less than the cost of a trash can liner. Then those who intended to reuse them could take them, and those who only would discard them would not. Trash disposal is a huge problem in L.A. - landfill space is so damn expensive around here that our money-losing recycling program actually saves money by cutting down on landfill. They do need to do things about it - just not dumb things like this.
