| ManateeGag neat story, but they couldn't come up with a better name? |

ManateeGag: neat story, but they couldn't come up with a better name? The name apparently came from the kid himself. |

| MaudlinMutantMollusk eh? |

| Mentat Too bad they didn't do this for Anne Frank. |

| WhoIsWillo I need a superhero to fight all this dust in here. |
||
| violentsalvation I though the headline meant that Marvel made him some hearing aides that a superhero would wear and I was let down but I still liked the story. |

| Apos Well done,Marvel! |
||
| Relatively Obscure Okay. That is awesome. Way to go kid, mom, and Marvel. |

Just so long as Ben Affleck doesn't play him in the movie. |

| FirstNationalBastard Next week, DC Comics is going to announce that one of their superheroes has always been deaf, even though we've clearly seen him hearing for the past 40 years. Then, the month after, he'll be able to hear again, because DC hates the handicapped. /good for Marvel. Does the kid get a piece of the character? |

Is wanting to see his lack of ear on the other side of his head wrong? If so.....I don't want to be right :-P |
||
| FirstNationalBastard Oh, yeah... I forgot that Hawkeye was nearly deaf before he died the first time. I wonder if Marvel will ride the wave of goodwill and do a book where proceeds go to a deaf charity, or something like that? Hell, get the kid to help 'em write it... it worked for Axe Cop. |

Stories like these give me hope that other companies will catch on that a random kindness will pay dividends in good PR. |

Batman has listening devices built into his cowl, too. Although he's not actually hearing impaired, he does use them. |

Good on Marvel. Inspiring young people has always pretty much been the point of super heroes. Nice to see they haven't forgotten that, even with all the brooding adult stuff in comics now. Excelsior! |

When I was a kid, my friends would often encourage me to masturbate. I didn't want to because I thought it was a sin and I'd go to hell if I masturbated. My friends called Marvel and asked for help in order to convince me that masturbation is a perfectly normal thing for humans to do. A few days later, I received a poster which seems to have come from Marvel. The poster had a picture of a villain named Blue Balls. |

FirstNationalBastard: Hawkeye Yeah, funny how Marvel conveniently left out the fact that he's no longer partially deaf thanks to multiple deaths and resurrections. In fact, his full hearing was restored when he came back in Heroes Reborn about 15 years ago. So he doesn't wear hearing aids any more. Although a year or so ago he got a concussion and almost went blind as a result. Luckily, Marvel editorial resurrected his brother and he got a stem-cell treatment that fully restored his sight at the end of the "Blindspot" mini-series. About the only lasting repercussion of that is we have an evil Hawkeye out there as a Dark Avenger (at least, in the storyline from a few months ago; dunno if he's gonna be in the new Dark Avengers book.). Hopefully he can be a foil in the Hawkeye ongoing. |

All it proves is that even Marvel has stopped paying attention to their own stories, and so should you. /I read that post in Comic Book Guy voice for some reason. |

| moothemagiccow If someone ever told me "but Hawkeye" I'd expect them to create an even crappier superhero to make their point more reasonable. |

PsyLord: Wait till he discovers that he has a less than average sized penis and contacts Marvel. Over the next 10 years or so we can look forward to superheros like "Gamer," "Over Sleeper," and "The Dropout." It is cool that Marvel did this--in this instance it is educational and inspirational. But we need to remember that Superheros are versions of our better Selves. Something to strive toward. I don't read comic books or know most of the characters. But I know we should desire to be like the hero rather than the hero striving to be like us. I can see this gesture getting out of hand--instead of inspiring a kid with a disadvantage, it could become a way to make average kids feel less average. Especially in this precious snowflake culture we are slogging through right now. |
