They are not commonplace by any stretch of the imagination. They have to prove that the individual isn't crazy; then they send a papal representative (like this guy) to deal with the actual exorcisum. Some bigger diocese have their own exorcisum priest, but only do an exorcisum if the Vatican sends its approval.
