Why do you all want to know what was said? Have the urge to pick a fight with an Argentinian politician sometime soon?

Loosely, it seems the reporter was reading from the local constitution for his municipality, mentioning the right of every citizen to express him/herself freely, without fear of being punished, and then-- BAM

It's like one of those crazy Mexican soap operas. I was expecting the mother of the journalist to pop in and stop the politician beating the guy, and then reveal he's really the father of her illegitimate lost baby.

Right! Because in Argentina, they have a law that prevents them from walking away from a reporter asking awkward questions. They have to either answer the question, or sucker-punch the reporter. It's called "Stained Your Ground".

And can we PLEASE button up that shirt? You are a politician, not Scarface.

Between politicians and reporters, you're siding with politicians? Wow.

Also, you're pretty much the world's biggest tool for cheering on the punchy douchebag, without even knowing what set him off. There's not much you can say that actually calls for a punch.

Not at all. I just think anyone should have the right to hit a reporter when they are sticking their nose where is does not belong (for the sake of getting the news out to the people
Asking inappropriate questions, messing with families after the loss of a loved one, messing with people at the scene of a tragic accident, damn near any "first on the scene' scenario'... If a political figure hit him on camera, I would bet it fell under the inappropriate question section .

Waiting for a translation....

"On Monday, April 16, in Candelaria, Misiones in Argentina, the city council president punched a journalist who was trying to cover a city council session and was denied access to it three times, being told that "journalists who wish to cover these sessions must first present their credentials," reported the Argentine Journalism Forum (FOPEA in Spanish).

The president of the city council, Jorge Peña, punched journalist Daniel Luna, owner of the TV station Canal 4 and editor of the news site Actualidad Sur, in the face when the journalist starting reading an article of the constitution about press freedom and freedom of expression, reported the news site Misiones Cuatro."

In addition to a translation of what was said, I'd be curious to know the backstory around where they are, why there seem to be a bunch of random people standing around, etc.

It looks like they're in some sort of rundown tenement building, but maybe it's city hall for all I know about Argentiniastan.

From: http://www.freemedia.at/home/singlevi ew/article/politicians-behind-re c ent-attacks-against-latin-american-jou rnalists.html...

"A prominent local journalist was punched in the face by a city council president after attempting to read aloud a section of the provincial constitution guaranteeing freedom of expression during a closed council session on 18 April, Argentinian media reported.

Daniel Luna, who owns Canal 4 television station and edits the news site Actualidad Sur, told media that the meetings of the Candelaria City Council in Misiones province had been closed to the press since March. He and several colleagues entered the council building anyway and sought to read the passage to Jorge Peña, the body's president, in protest.

"Suddenly they punched me and I fell to the ground, where I received numerous kicks from [Peña], [who was] totally out of control" the journalist recounted, according to news reports. A colleague who attempted to push Peña away was also struck and shoved to the ground, Luna said. "

How is that for freedom of expression? :-P

Thank you. I was thinking it was one of those instances where the reporter was reading a direct quote from the politician and the politician responded the only way he knew how.

wow you're serious?!? I thought you were trolling!

The reporter was reading a part of the Argentine constitution dealing with freedom of the press. He had been prevented from attending a council session by the head of the council (Mr. Punchy)

The reporter had the right to be present at the council meeting, and was reading the council president the excerpt when he got sucker punched.

So you're basically applauding a corrupt politician for abrogating that reporter's right to attend a public council meeting AND assault.

You sir, are a tool.
