Didn't seem that strange. Dude is living in a 3rd world country, a local politician hit him up for money, when he refused he sent the police in to give him a scare.

If his hideout is like his program, the front door will have automatic sentry turrets but the unlocked window will be blocked by a curtain.

True story:
Back in 1996 when living on campus at Virginia Tech, we found out that McAfee AV prevented you from being able to connect to a local network multiple player game of Duke Nukem.

I love the comments. They zoom right into the "sleeping with a seventeen year old" part of the story. It's kind of creepy that that is what they focus on.

According to him, it was more that an American drug company felt threatened by his work in anti-biotics and bought a local politician to make life difficult for him.

It was, up until about 4 or 5 years ago. Now I don't even want to go back home for vacation. Afraid to walk the streets. Although, some people will say that they're fine with the "don't fark with me, I won't fark with you". But I'm not. People will get stabby for any reason, or none at all.

True. Someone said it was 16, 14 if married.

On the other hand, he's 66 years old, and having a 17 year old girlfriend in ANY country just screams "I'm a skeevy mofo".

I spent half a year in Belize (mostly underwater) in the early 90s.

It was an amazing experience. Drug trafficking was mostly through Honduras, but a little bit went through the NW corner of Belize. What is funny is that the trafficking was supported by a bunch of Mennonites.

Anyway, most tourists are out on the cayes - primarily Ambergris, Caulker, and Lighthouse. There are only a few decent-sized towns and all the rest is 'jungle' and fruit groves planted by Coca Cola. I became quite friendly with some Canadians that ran a bar/restaurant/inn called JB's that was practically in the middle of the jungle. Some of the stories I heard.... surreal... life is kind of cheap in central America.

Think of Belize as Mexico, except the language is English, it isn't crowded, and it is in the jungle.

Everything was awesome in Belize. Ingredients were fresh and the amount of local produce was simply amazing. When I ate @ JB's I usually got a burger. They have a history of catering to the military, mostly Brits but plenty of Yanks too, so I satisfied my craving for Americanized food when I went by there. I hear they refurbished JBs a little while ago due to the whole falling apart from neglect. For me, when I was going across Belize I stopped at JBs and got fed, wasted, and laid instead of trying to do the same in Belize City. The owners at the time were nice and I had a good time. Even bought a t-shirt. If you are doing the tourist-thing you will never see JBs since it is near the east/west running highway between Belize City and Honduras. What are your plans while you are there? A friend just got back from Ambergris caye and she had a blast.

Eh, more power to him.

I would need to observe the relationship in real life in order to conclude whether I approve or disapprove of that particular instance. I try not to get as caught up in judging age differences as a sole variable as much as others seem to let themselves be.

If you don't speak Spanish, better pick Belize. Also, they are 500 miles away from each other. It isn't like you can drive over the border.

Also, it is Guatemala that is west of Belize. I always switch Guatemala and Honduras in my head because Belize was previously known as British Honduras.

Regardless, have fun in central America and try not to act like a tourist.

Only been as far as El Salvador, so I can't comment on Costa Rica, but if you DO go to Belize, I'd suggest sticking to the islands as much as possible. Also, If you're not handy with your Espanol, I'd say Belize.

Well, it probably is, if you aren't a millionaire running a meth lab.

"Antibiotics lab" my ass. I think John McAfee just watched Breaking Bad and figured out a slick way of investing his money (until the chemist left him)

Oooooh. About to get. Well, my friend who you just got back from Ambergris in February did her class and checkout dive at the resort in Ambergris. She had an absolute blast. It is pretty easy to get there too. Fly into Belize City (there are lots of direct flights from the US) and then hop a little prop out to the caye. If Belize City has really gotten dangerous you can completely avoid it that way.

Now once you get some experience diving you should go back again. There are many excellent diving locations along the barrier reef and cayes. The most obvious advanced dive is the Blue Hole, but a novice has a decent chance of getting killed there so you might want to pass on the option of taking a plane out to Lighthouse caye. You should be prepared to drink a lot. I think it might even be required now. As I understand it there are now all-inclusive resorts there now - so you can either do that, or you can just book a beach cabana somewhere and fend for yourself. Also, don't hesitate to have the locals take you to other islands by boat. There is a lot to see and do while you are there.
