As long as he catches it before any part of his body touches the ground out of bounds, its an out.

Hey guys, I just came into a baseball thread to comment about how I don't like baseball. See how cool and superior I am? Sorry, I have to go now. I have an appointment to watch SevenizGud suck a bus load of cock.

I agree. That is what I thought the rule was.

It is only a matter of time before someone climbs the fence and jumps off it into the crowd to make a catch with a rule like that. It could potentially injure spectators.

Seems like a weird rule to me.

Think less "outfield" and more "catchers falling into the dugout for a foul fly".

Why is the fence only 2 feet off the ground? It seems a catch like that would happen all the time in that league.

I was thinking more of 4 year old catches spike to the face as catcher jumps into the crowd.

not by NCAA rule....touching the ground isn't part of the rule at all.

NCAA Rule 15(b):

If a fielder falls over or through the fence after making a catch within the field of play, the batter shall be retired and the ball is dead (see 6-1-d and 8-3-m).

Here the argument could be made where did the player catch the ball, with respect to the rule;s "within the field of play" aspect. but then you'd have to go Zapruder on the footage and as far as I know, the NCAA doesn't have instant replay.

i_dig_chicks: Why is the fence only 2 feet off the ground? It seems a catch like that would happen all the time in that league.

i wonder if with the fences that small, there was a local rule about that specific instance. "if a guy catches a ball and goes over, because our fences are only 3 feet high, that will be an out."

Maybe four feet, but it was the shortest fence I've seen for adult games.

The rule of thumb is that as long as it is your momentum that carries you out of the field of play, the out counts.

The various leagues write it up differently, but that is the gist of it.

Well, I guess if you're going to have fences shorter than some hurdles, you make it possible for plays like that.

I wonder why you'd construct the park with that thing. Nice catch, though I see better a couple times a week in Arena Football (try making a football catch going over a wall like that - and it's not nice soft grass on the other side of the wall - it's plastic arena seating).

You're also wearing padding, and the ball is a lot bigger and probably travelling more slowly.

But yeah, totally the same.

You realize that it's harder to catch a big ball than a small one, right?

No, it's not the same, the football catch is much, much more difficult.

That assclown Jeff Passan on Yahoo called it the greatest catch ever, saying he leaped over a four foot fence. So this guy is at least 8 feet tall since the fence comes up to about his hip.

Yes... great catch... greatest ever? Ummm, I'd have to think the guys who have leaped above 10 foot walls to catch a home run ball and bring it back into play have the edge, there.

Never even knew the NCAA had that rule, I caught a ball once going over the fence and it was ruled to be a HR but that was in a pony league game.

I bet the low fences have a sub rule that was ignored.

They must have a deal where any ground-rule double means $1 beer until the inning ends. Nice diving catch, but not that impressed.

You want to see fence-defying catches, look to Japanese baseball.

I've never understood this rule - guys catch balls in foul territory all the time for outs. Does this only pertain to HR's? I guess it must.

Foul territory and out-of-bounds are not the same thing. There is an actual out-of-bounds line that starts essentially at the walls all around the field. This way you couldn't actually climb into the stands and catch the ball, not that it's terribly likely that would ever happen.

The OOB line actually comes into play a lot more in adult softball or baseball leagues where there isn't a fence around the whole field. There is usually a second chalk line outside of the foul line that constitutes OOB. Anything caught on the wrong side of that line does not count.

Not bad, especially at an age where you still have to tell the kids which way to run.
