Um, no. It looks pretty much the same as any other suspension bridge, including the nearby Bay Bridge, which has more towers.

If it wasn't for that bridge Marilyn Demont would be alive today. Who knows maybe she would have grown up to cure AIDS.

Are you talking about jumpers or construction workers?

Very few died during construction. One of the first bridges built with an installed safety net.

That's like saying all cars look alike and therefore none can be considered beautiful. I've seen plenty of ugly suspension bridges too. The Golden Gate is a beautiful design, period.

I don't know about most beautiful, but it's certainly has dramatic scenery, a beautiful design, and a FABULOUS city nearby. That's right, Sausalito.

There's a documentary, I think called The Bridge that chronicles suicides from the bridge. They set up long range camera's and just filmed people on the bridge. If they saw a suicide about to occur they called the cops, but ...

They got an amazing amount of criticism for the filming, which is odd since pretty much no one knew they were there except the authorities who received the calls. Some of their calls lead to rescues, some people got close to jumping then chickened out (or sobered up), some people had no delay at all, just walked out on the bridge picked their spot and were over the side in a matter of seconds.

I remember around the 50th anniversary there was also an extensive interview with one of the few survivors, a woman in this case, of a suicide attempt from the GG.

Um, no. The Golden Gate Bridge is unlike any other suspension bridge built.

Here's a few reasons why. Two billion-plus vehicles have made the trip between San Francisco and Marin County on The Golden Gate Bridge since 1937. It has been in more movies than Ronald Reagan. It's my daily commute.

ummm...the controversy was that they lied to the government to get permission to shoot, they said it was going to be a 'day in the life' kind of thing, and they did not mention they were there to shoot suicides.
Also, the filmmakers interviewed the families and friends of the deceased without telling them they had footage of their loved ones dying, and that they were going to put it on the big screen.
That film is truly disturbing, and honestly I do not understand how those filmmakers can live with themselves after making that, and all the lies they had to tell to make the film.
**********************

ANYWAY! That said, I plan on going to the bridge Sunday night to see the fireworks. They are closing the bridge from 9-10pm for them. WOOOHOOOO!

So having a lot of traffic makes the bridge look different?

I don't know if you posted that because of this fact but the original design for the Golden Gate bridge was similar to that.

Of course everyone's glad now they went with the suspension design.
